Senior Software Development Engineer - Services
About this role
Capital One’s mission is to change banking for good by bringing humanity, ingenuity, and simplicity to banking. Sitting at the core of such values is our Software Engineering department whose primary role is to be an enabler of our ambitions.
Capital One is looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to join a backend team, based in our London office.
Our Engineers are people who lead by example, build strong and valuable relationships, and have the confidence to influence at all levels. We are proud of who we are and what we do and want you to join us at this particularly exciting time at Capital One.
What you’ll do
1. You’ll work as part of a self-organised Services engineering team to design and develop software features that are delightful and vital to the lives of credit card consumers across all walks of life.
2. Your focus is on a major portion of existing or new team software (e.g., significant component, set of features, mid-size application or service).
3. You’ll work to achieve the goals and vision shared by Product Management and your Tribe Leadership.
4. Drive engineering best practices (e.g., Operational Excellence, Security, Quality, etc.) and set standards across your team and wider engineering teams.
5. Innovate within your team, initiative area, and contribute within your technical domain.
What we’re looking for
1. Proven experience in technical leadership, with a passion for mentoring and nurturing engineers.
2. Demonstrable knowledge of creating architectural designs that meet the business need.
3. Exceptional programming skills and knowledge of building APIs using modern OO languages, preferably Java, SOLID principles, SOA, HTTP, and REST.
4. You’re able to effectively communicate and work together across engineering to maximize inner-sourcing opportunities and reduce waste.
5. You’ll have a proven ability to deliver high-quality applications at scale.
6. You’re an advocate for quality and can support the team leveraging approaches such as Pair Programming, TDD, and BDD.
What you’ll get to learn (any previous experience would be advantageous)
1. Working with the cloud/AWS and the opportunities that it brings.
2. Solving real-world problems and being comfortable working in a complex regulated environment.
Where and how you'll work
This is a permanent position and will be based in our London office. Our hybrid working model offers you the flexibility to work from our offices and from home, when you need to.
We're big on collaboration and connection, and so generally encourage our associates to use our offices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The number of days you spend in the office will usually be led by the type of work you’re doing and the hybrid working patterns of the people you partner most closely with. Many of our associates have flexible working arrangements, and we're open to talking about an arrangement that works for you.
What’s in it for you
1. Bring us all this - and you’ll be handsomely rewarded with a role contributing to the product roadmap for an organization committed to transformation.
2. We’re continuing our journey into the public cloud and have problems of scale, security, availability, and performance for you to help solve.
3. We love continuous learning, and that’s why we give you 10% of your time to work on cutting-edge innovative projects that shape the way we will work in the future.
4. We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers).
5. Immediate access to our core benefits including pension scheme, bonus, generous holiday entitlement, and private medical insurance – with flexible benefits available including season-ticket loans, cycle to work scheme, and enhanced parental leave.
6. Open-plan workspaces and facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms. In London, you can heighten your mood with a run on our rooftop running track or an espresso at the Workshop Coffee café.
What you should know about how we recruit
We are committed to creating a level playing field and seek to create teams that are representative of our customers and the communities we serve. We’d love to hear from you if you identify with a typically under-represented group in our industry and are particularly keen to hear from women and ethnic minority candidates.
We pride ourselves on hiring the best people, not the same people. Building diverse and inclusive teams is the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. We want to work with top talent: whoever you are, whatever you look like, wherever you come from. We know it’s about what you do, not just what you say. That’s why we make our recruitment process fair and accessible. And we offer benefits that attract people at all ages and stages.
We also partner with organizations including the Women in Finance and Race At Work Charters, Stonewall, and upReach to find people from every walk of life and help them thrive with us. We have a whole host of internal networks and support groups you could be involved in, to name a few:
* REACH – Race Equality and Culture Heritage group focuses on representation, retention, and engagement for associates from minority ethnic groups and allies.
* OutFront – to provide LGBTQ+ support for all associates.
* Mind Your Mind – signposting support and promoting positive mental wellbeing for all.
* Women in Tech – promoting an inclusive environment in tech.
* EmpowHER - network of female associates and allies focusing on developing future leaders, particularly for female talent in our industry.
Capital One is committed to diversity in the workplace.
