It is an exciting time to be joining Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust which has resulted from the merger of The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital NHS Trusts.
The Luton site is undergoing a major redevelopment programme to include a new theatre unit comprising integrated theatres and futuristic equipment.
Applications are invited for the above full-time post to join our current team of 8 Upper GI consultants with varying specialist interests including Bariatric, Upper GI and Pancreatobiliary surgery, based at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. You will join a wider team of 14 Consultants in General Surgery with specialist interests and 6 Consultants in Urology with supporting medical staff. The on-call commitment for general surgery will be 1 in 12.
This is a newly created post to support the expansion of Laparoscopic Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery. Luton and Dunstable has become a major regional centre for obesity surgery. The Surgical Service is well supported by a Medical Obesity Service and an Obesity Clinical Research Unit. The post will have regular bariatric clinic and operating sessions. We are looking for a surgeon with advanced laparoscopic skills, ideally with experience of laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Further training in bariatric surgical procedures will be available to a suitable candidate.
Main duties of the job
The Hospital is located at Junction 11 of the M1 motorway which gives excellent road access to both central London, and to the Midlands and North via the M1 and A1. There is also good rapid rail access to London, and London Luton Airport is within twenty minutes of the hospital. The surrounding areas are both urban and rural, the latter including many attractive villages, within easy reach of the Hospital. Excellent schools are found nearby.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Registration
* MB ChB or Equivalent.
* FRCS (General Surgery) or equivalent
* JAG accredited in Upper GI Endoscopy
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, CCT or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview
Clinical Experience
* Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in General Surgery and Bariatrics
* Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
* Excellent all round experience of DGH work
* Evidence of subspecialty training or fellowship out of region
* Bariatric Surgical fellowship
Clinical Governance
* Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance and individual responsibilities it implies
* Knowledge of the principles of evidence-based practice
* Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and direct experience of audit.
* An interest which improves the General Surgery and bariatrics pathway in all aspects
* Evidence of implementing relevant evidence-based medicine
* Implementation of evidence-based guidelines
* Participation in relevant national audits.
Research
* Knowledge of the principles of research and ability to interpret and apply clinical research
