Main Duties and Responsibilities Develop policies for infection control to include safe working practices, hand washing, food hygiene, decontamination, specimen handling, needle stick injury, storage and disposal of vaccines, outbreak control, dealing with C-Diff, MRSA and CJD and the reporting of notifiable diseases and also what to do in the event of patient collapse and chaperoning Keep up to date decontamination records Carry out regular audit of infection control processes in the practice Develop protocols for, carry out Cervical Cytology and co-ordination of cytology screening in the practice Take an active lead on chlamydia screening within the practice Ordering of C-Card supplies as required Provide annual reviews to patients on agreed QOF/QIF registers (COPD, Asthma, AF, CHD, HF, Stroke, Diabetes, CKD) to include general health checks, medication reviews, commence and make adjustments to medication where necessary (prescribing nurse only) Venepuncture Responsibility for disease management of patients with long-term conditions (including adherence to QOF / QIF and any other relevant standards) Lead on family Planning Wound care / ulcer care Removal of Sutures New patient medicals / Urinalysis Older persons medicals NHS health checks Learning disability health checks ECGs Lead on travel and routine immunisations Lead on 24 hour BP arranging, settling up, monitoring results and discussing results with the GP to agree management plan for the patient Travel advice Booking minor surgery clinics, assisting GPs with minor surgery Lead on and carry out Childhood immunisations advising other members of the team and giving updates on any changes Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician Requesting pathology tests, for example urine culture, swabs Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate Smoking cessation advice Lifestyle advice Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required Maintaining weekly clinical room deep clean Maintaining the flushing of the clinical room taps Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms Attend and participate in any Practice meetings On occasion there may be a requirement to undertake home visits Ensuring fridge temperatures are monitored Understand and maintain the principles of the cold chain Ensure safe storage, rotation and disposal of vaccines and drugs within area of responsibility ensuring any items are removed at the end of their shelf life Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by GPs Ensure adequate supplies of health information literature for patients Know the general principles of first aid and resuscitation to be able to undertake initial actions as appropriate To carry out clinical audits as required At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate computerised records Communicating effectively with patients and carers, and recognising their needs for alternative methods of communication. Provide support and mentor new members of staff clinically and with evidence based knowledge Provide clinical support and basic training to the Health Care Assistants. Adhere to all practice policies procedures and guidelines Comply with the standards set out in the contract of employment Undertake any other duties as appropriate to the role
