THE ROLE
The BBC East Midlands region covers the biggest and best stories from the counties of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire – including vast parts of the Peak District - Leicestershire and Rutland. We are a multi-platform newsroom with an approach that prioritises digital first, and seek to achieve maximum impact across online, TV and radio.
We are looking for an experienced text journalist to join our digital team, primarily writing for the BBC News website. This will be a truly multimedia role with an emphasis on digital-first storytelling and finding and telling stories that will all run on our digital and social media channels, as well as television and radio. We want driven and passionate journalists who want to help reach new audiences with the news that matters to them. The role requires someone who will be keen to do more than just look for press releases – we want original ideas that help reflect the diverse audience that lives across the region. Creative treatments, gaining great access to people at the heart of stories and working collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues are essential.
Main responsibilities
1. Writing news stories with local, national and international audiences in mind.
2. Being ready to produce fast, accurate copy when a big story breaks – it’s likely to be on the BBC News front page, so you’ll need to be confident writing quickly and accurately.
3. Originating and producing stories for the BBC News website which can also be used on other outlets, as well as turning around content from wires and press releases.
4. Working with colleagues to ensure all our journalism works across digital, TV and audio platforms.
5. Tailoring different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve.
6. The role requires some weekend working and early/late start times.
Are you the right candidate?
To be successful, you will have:
1. Text reporting experience in a news environment.
2. Editorial experience and sound editorial judgement.
3. Experience working efficiently and accurately to rolling deadlines and breaking news. The ability to deliver high quality copy that demonstrates the BBC’s values of impartiality and fairness is compulsory.
4. You will have demonstrable experience of embracing technology, adopting new skills and adapting to the changing demands of a digital working environment.
Job package
Salary: £27,300 - £35,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Contract type: 6 month attachment or fixed term contract.
Location: Office Base is Leicester.
