Belmont Recruitment are currently looking for a Democratic Services Administrator to join Barnsley Council on an initial 3-6 month temporary contract. This is a part-time role working 22.5-30 hours per week, depending on the needs of the service. The Role: Democratic and Member Services is at the heart of the Council. Providing support for Councillors and for meetings of the Council is an essential part of ensuring the decision-making processes of the Council, ensuring it runs smoothly and effectively. Working flexibly, primarily office based, but with some remote working, you will provide support in the unit for a range of administrative processes relating to the Council’s formal meetings and decision-making processes, as well as school admission appeals. The post holder will also work closely with Councillors with a range of tasks, including updating their webpages, processing allowance claims, booking / publicising advice surgeries, and maintaining the Council diary. You will also give routine advice on procedures to Councillors and officers, helping to direct enquiries to the appropriate place within the Council. The post holder will also provide absence cover for the Cabinet Members’ Personal Assistants. Requirements: In particular, you will need experience in a business support role and working with confidential information, as well as experience of using business systems. Some experience of local government and knowledge of the functions of the Council would also useful. Good communication skills and the ability to exercise tact and diplomacy are essential, particularly in developing a close working relationship with Councillors and officers throughout the Council. Working as part of a team you will also need to be able to balance a range competing priorities and manage your own workload accordingly. Experience of using Microsoft software, is needed, and the ability to apply this experience in using other systems such as Modern.gov, our meeting software, would be useful, but is not essential. Working Hours: Hours for the post are negotiable, with hours from 18.5 to 37 per week available, with flexibility around working patterns, but the preference for these largely to be towards the end of the week (to include Wednesday, Thursday and Friday).
