Incumbents in this position are responsible for assisting in the collection of samples and the monitoring of public drinking water and wastewater for Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.
* In the absence of the Water Quality Supervisor, trains, assigns daily work, and maintains water quality and compliance for 3 separate distribution systems.
* In the absence of Water Quality Supervisor, prepares and responds to communication concerning water quality actions and complaints.
* Assists Water Quality Supervisor with planning and managing BWA (Boil water advisories) and issuing notifications.
* Obtains samples of the drinking water and wastewater in the distribution/collection system in strict accordance with established monitoring procedures.
* Transports samples to the lab for testing for state compliance and for special projects.
* Samples new lines for activation and activates new lines.
* Conducts flow tests, pressure surveys, and an annual flushing program.
* Collects GPS data utilizing a GPS device. Notifies supervisor of any mapping inaccuracies.
* Disables water main for emergencies or for work on distribution system, restores water, flushes lines, and collects sample for analysis after restoring water to customers.
* Assists with investigating customer complaints by collecting samples, reporting findings to the supervisor, and recommending appropriate action to remedy customer concerns.
* Maintains detailed records of investigations and maintenance assignments.
* Directs the path of contaminated water flow during system flushing by following directions from a supervisoror system ORC.
* Chooses the appropriate hydrant and/or valve to ensure water quality during scheduled maintenance and emergency repair so as to contain and properly flush any water contaminants.
* Assists with providing instructions to construction crews in disinfecting newly installed water mains through appropriate use of chlorine, flow direction, and discharges into the collection system.
* Uses GIS maps, engineered drawings, and knowledge of the distribution system configuration to locate problem areas for implementation of flushing programs.
* Responds to emergency and other operation situations.
* Performs preventive maintenance on equipment as directed.
* Performs other related job duties as assigned.
In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties.
* High school diploma or GED.
* Five (5) years of work experience in water quality or any related work field.
* Requires a Class “B” or “A” Distribution license.
* Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid State of North Carolina driver's license.
