Job Summary
Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) is the UK's independent professionally-led haemovigilance scheme. This is a unique opportunity to join an internationally respected organisation. Since 1996, SHOT has been collecting and analysing anonymised information on adverse events and reactions in blood transfusion from all healthcare organisations involved in the transfusion of blood and blood components in the UK. Where risks and problems are identified, SHOT produces recommendations to improve patient safety. The recommendations are published in its annual report and circulated to all relevant organisations including the four UK Blood Services, the Departments of Health in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, and all relevant professional bodies and reporting hospitals.
Main Duties of the Job
1. Producing reports, presentations, manuscripts, surveys, and studies on behalf of SHOT for the annual report, peer-reviewed journals, symposia, and other publications and presentations as required.
2. Working closely with the SHOT Working Expert Group (WEG) on interpretation of data for reports, publications, and manuscripts.
3. Setting up working groups and study teams to carry out research as agreed with SOM and MD, and co-ordinating all activities throughout the project.
4. Leading on projects related to adverse incident reporting, which may involve spending time in hospitals and blood establishments.
5. Liaising with the SHOT Research Analyst over the writing of queries, selection, and extraction of data, adding expert interpretation and discussion.
6. Formulating plans and initiating clinically-based in-depth studies arising from SHOT data and trends, identifying data to be collected and methods of analysis, and developing hypotheses.
7. Critically appraising the data produced, conducting literature searches, and timely production of reports, manuscripts, and presentations of the data.
8. Representing SHOT at Regional, National, and International meetings and presenting clinical data and studies.
9. Leading on the development of recommendations for action and changes in clinical practice based on findings, and interacting with external professional and regulatory bodies regarding this.
