The appointment is for an exciting clinical position, in an active friendly Clinical Microbiology/Infection service. We are looking for a Consultant in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology & Infectious Diseases. We are looking for a 10PA consultant to support our existing 4.9 WTE consultants. The team is supported by two excellent OPAT nurses, 2 HSST trainees, 1 STP trainee, 2 LTFT SpRs (shared with Porton Down) and 2 FY2s (shared with GU medicine). This post is to cover a current vacant post and ideally would involve cross site cover of clinical duties.
The department operates a two consultant duty model with one covering Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH), one covering Royal Hampshire County Hospital, Winchester (RHCH) & calls from primary care & laboratory authorisation of Primary Care/ Serology work. The laboratory scientific team are based in the Microbiology laboratory at Basingstoke Hospital. There is an essential services laboratory at RHCH which performs blood culture incubation, respiratory PCR and a number of other diagnostic tests to support rapid infection and infection control decision making.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties include the following:
1. Undertake result reporting in core hours
2. Respond in a timely manner to clinical and laboratory enquiries (in line with RCPath KPIs)
3. Out of hours clinical advice on call on a 1:7 rota including weekends, week nights and bank holidays. Remote access is available to allow remote interrogation of LIMS and other Trust electronic systems (radiology, prescribing) when on call.
4. Ensure that important findings rapidly reach the requesting clinicians and advise regarding appropriate action
5. Be involved in the clinical management of patients in the hospital and community. This includes both daily ward rounds to ITU and complex infection patients as described above.
6. By mutual agreement candidates with an interest in participating in the OPAT service and Infection clinic may rotate to cover this service.
7. Supervise and support the junior doctors and trainee clinical scientist in Microbiology as appropriate to their stage of training and needs.
8. Liaise with the infection prevention nurses and DIPC and ensure day to day input as appropriate to operational infection prevention work including outbreak investigation and management, should this be required.
9. Support the leads for antibiotic usage, Infection Control and department and Pathology management as appropriate.

Essential criteria
* Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
* Entry onto GMC specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
* MBBS or equivalent
* MRCP (UK) & FRCPath or equivalent qualification
* CCT in Microbiology/Infectious Disease or Microbiology or equivalent
Desirable criteria
* UK/NHS experience
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
* Ability to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the management of infection & Antimicrobial Stewardship
* Experience of ward based clinical microbiology liaison & consultation.
Desirable criteria
* Experience in Antibiotic Review/Stewardship Service
* Experience in care of inpatients & outpatients with HIV, TB, Hepatitis
* Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy Service; Infection Clinic experience
* Previous experience as Infection Control Doctor
* Attendance at relevant courses
Clinical Skills
Essential criteria
* Laboratory & Clinical experience in bacteriology, virology, mycology & parasitology
* Good IT skills/experience of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS)
