Principal Duties & Areas of Responsibility Clinical Provide expert clinical practice to support the delivery of compassionate quality, safe and efficient care that enhances the patients experience Provide support to fellow professionals in the surgical teams, including the junior doctors and develop close working relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team. Participate as part of the multidisciplinary team in admission and preoperative assessment of cardiac surgical patients. Ensuring correct information is obtained and documented as per Trust guidelines Act as the first or second assistant in cardiac surgical operative procedures providing expert experience and skills during complex surgery. Undertake specified surgical procedures under agreed levels of supervision and in accordance with Trust Policy including, but not limited to: - Opening and closing wounds (suturing skills) - Tissue dissection - Use of diathermy - Haemostasis - Infiltration of local anaesthetic - Aiding visualisation of the operative field - Application of surgical staplers and surgical guns during operative procedures - Assist with minimally invasive surgery Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team with post-operative care for patients undertaking assessment of potential post operative complications and referring as appropriate. Provide expert knowledge, training, advice, information and support to multidisciplinary team Work with all members of the theatre team to ensure the smooth, efficient running of the theatre lists. Be a knowledgeable resource of information regarding perioperative care and operative procedures to patients, carers and staff. Participate as part of the multidisciplinary team through attendance and active participation in outpatients, medical staff ward handovers and ward rounds. Develop and monitor and update clinical guidelines, protocols and policies using evidenced based that support safe and standardised delivery of care to patients. Participate as part of the multidisciplinary team in collection, collation and presentation of data for audit. Plan and manage own workload and the workload of the service in a flexible manner, ensuring that the service provision meets the needs of the client group Participate in and contribute to relevant Trust committees and groups contributing to developing and implementing local and national strategy. Undertake duties on other wards or departments as and when required by service demands or patient need Act in such a way that safeguards the health and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults at all times. Is familiar with and adheres to, the LTHT safeguarding policies Education and Training Lead the review and development of training and education programs for the multidisciplinary team. Identify own development needs in line with service requirements through annual appraisal and personal development plan Actively participate in the appraisal of others Undertake mandatory and priority training at the agreed time periods Act as mentor/preceptor and resource person, and provide clinical supervision in order to support development of individuals and practice Ensure the clinical environment is conducive to supporting the education and learning of all staff and students Provide educational and training opportunities to pre-registration Nursing and Operating Department Practitioner students to ensure that placements satisfy the relevant elements of their learning agreement Provide an environment that encourages client centred involvement where clients and carers are facilitated to ask for help, advice and education Contribute to the Clinical Governance Agenda Leadership Act as a professional role model, providing standards of care and behaviour through clinical practice Provide support to the Theatre Manager / Matron in delivering the functions of the specialist practitioner role, and take appropriate action when standards of quality, quantity and timeliness are not met Be highly visible in the clinical area Contribute to the development of CSU/Departmental objectives Act as a role model of standards of behaviour and professionalism, through commitment to the integration of policies and procedures within own role and workplace Contribute to local clinical networks and specialist specific groups, working in partnership with other key professionals Analyse relevant National policy, advise on impact for service, and lead the implementation of change and evaluation processes in partnership with the MDT Maintain professional registration and practice through CPD Complete revalidation process to maintain registration Maintain professional portfolio to demonstrate competency in line with Trust framework Raise concerns with regards to risk, danger, malpractice or wrong doing by following the LTHT Whistleblowing policy and supporting processes Research and Development Evaluate clinical practice through audit of service, developing and managing strategies to address any shortfalls Demonstrate knowledge of current research in all aspects of the specialist role, and become involved in research projects in response to identified needs Disseminate results/research findings via local team and/or national/international publications Promote the shared objectives of the MDT by working closely to ensure that best practice is achieved utilising both clinical benchmarking, audit and relevant evidence base Health and Safety/Risk Management All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system. Infection Control The jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact with patients and their environment. Training and Personal Development Continuous Professional Development The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role. Respect for Patient Confidentiality The jobholder should respect patient confidentiality at all times and not divulge patient information unless sanctioned by the requirements of the role.
