Job Description:
We are seeking a Band 5 Mental Health Nurse to join us on Haytor ward.
This is an exciting opportunity for both newly qualified nurses, who would be supported through our preceptorship programme, and those nurses that have been qualified for a period of time but would like to expand their experience.
Haytor Ward is a 16 bedded acute ward providing care for adults with mental health needs. Haytor is co-located with Salus and Beech ward within the South Devon and Torbay Mental Health Centre within the Torbay General Hospital site. This mental health centre incorporates adult inpatient wards, older adults inpatient ward, a psychiatric liaison service, outpatient services and Home Treatment Team base.
You will quickly become part of a friendly and supportive multi-disciplinary team where you will be using your skills and experience to support those in our care on the road to recovery.
We encourage you to learn, develop and grow. For newly qualified staff we have a well-established preceptorship programme which links into our wider multidisciplinary CPD programme. Those looking to gain further experience will be supported in maintaining professional links, through involvement in regular profession-specific CPD opportunities.
In order to support you we offer a robust supervision framework and have clear clinical and leadership development programmes.

Communication & Working Relationships

Responsibility for Patient/Client Care, Treatment & Therapy
* To act as named nurse for a cohort of patients.
* To assess complex health and well-being needs, develop, monitor and review care plans to meet individual needs.
* To update all records on RiO (electronic clinical records).
* To provide robust risk assessments and ensure they are updated regularly on RiO (electronic clinical records).
* To maintain professionalism at all times/whilst being non-judgemental.
* To ensure safe practice working to NMC, Government and Trust policies/procedures.
* Maintain accurate documentation using the correct recording systems (mostly electronic).
Policy, Service, Research & Development Responsibility
* To be aware of national and professional developments.
* To participate in ongoing training and education progress.

* To provide Supervision and Appraisals to appropriate/allocated staff. To participate in the role of Mentor to students.

* There is a requirement to support learners on a regular basis which includes the achievement and updating of profession-specific training to the required standard to fulfil this role.
Information Resources & Administrative Duties

Person Specification
Experience
* Experience of Adult and/or Older Persons mental health nursing and the nursing process.
Skills and Abilities
* Excellent verbal and written skills. Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users, carers and other professional bodies. Excellent IT skills. Ability to engage in and lead (when required) MDT meetings. Ability to assess situations, make decisions, co-ordinate and organise appropriate responses. Have an awareness and ability to maintain personal boundaries. Able to risk assess. To be able to plan and implement all aspects of nursing skills. To demonstrate effective leadership skills, promote effective role model across the ward environment. To work to the Trust Data Protection and Confidentiality guidance/policy. Be able to work as part of a team. Work as an effective role model. Promote effective service delivery and future changes in a positive way. Willingness to develop self.
Qualifications
* RMN/ Registered Nurse (Mental Health) with current registration. A willingness to complete Trust Mandatory Courses (will be required to complete and undertake relevant Physical Interventions training with adjustments considered if required).
Knowledge
* Knowledge of ordering, storing and administering required medications. Knowledge of possible side effects of medication. Knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1987 (including updates). Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act & Deprivation of Liberty safeguards.
* Multi-Disciplinary Working. Understanding of Recovery principles in Mental Health. Knowledge and understanding of both adult and children's safeguarding guidance.
