An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the rheumatology nursing team. The Rheumatology nursing team provides a range of nurse-led services.
The DMARD nurse is a band 5 role within this team and will be based in Neath Port Talbot. Their role is to be responsible for the monitoring of the Rheumatology patients who are receiving Disease Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs (D.M.A.R.D.s).
The nurse will be responsible for blood monitoring. To do this, they will send out relevant blood forms and monitor and interpret results within departmental protocols. They will work closely with the rheumatology consultant team, escalating any concerns to them. Once bloods are monitored, the right person will need to employ excellent time management skills to liaise with the team and ensure the timely provision of prescriptions for patients.
The nurse will need to be digitally literate and confident in using a variety of digital systems to look up and record blood results and patient communications and prescriptions supplied. Note that you do not need to be a nurse prescriber for this role, and full training on the systems required for use will be given.
Once a patient is established on DMARDs, the nurse will ensure the smooth transition from secondary to primary care, liaising with GPs and other community services.
Main duties of the job
The right candidate will also need to be able to communicate effectively via telephone with patients and other family members. They should be able to establish a good rapport with patients and work well within a multi-disciplinary team that includes nurses, clinical nurse specialists, doctors, pharmacists, secretaries, and administrative staff.
As the DMARD nurse, you will be expected to develop a comprehensive knowledge base of DMARD medications, including reactions and common side effects. There may also be opportunities to support other areas in rheumatology, such as the biological service with blood monitoring.
The DMARD nurse will also be expected to assist in audit processes.
This is a unique role, and we encourage informal conversations with the nursing team so that you can fully understand the role and its scope.
