We are seeking to appoint a self-motivated and passionate candidate who can fulfil the role of Second in Humanities with a Lead in Geography. We are proud of our Humanities curriculum: it has been designed to capture the vast and impressive aspects of life that we seek to pass onto the students in our care.
The successful candidate will have the ability to deliver quality teaching that drives achievement and inspires a love of learning. As a committed team player, you will have excellent organisational skills and the natural ability to motivate both pupils and peers.
The Second in Humanities is responsible for aspects of teaching and learning throughout the Academy alongside the Head of Humanities. This involves the leadership and support of the staff as well as the management, organisation and administration of the work of the department.
About the Humanities Department
The Humanities department is a well-established department consisting of 7 teachers of History and Geography. We are a friendly, close-knit team who work cohesively, planning and sharing resources to ensure we put students first and provide the very best lessons for our students. It is an exciting time in our department as we have recently redesigned our KS3 curriculum, which is engaging and innovative, enabling us to get the very best out of our students. Within Geography, we have the opportunity for students to complete exciting fieldwork and we study the AQA Geography specification at GCSE. This specification offers students the chance to explore topics such as; climate change, poverty, deprivation and the challenge of sustainable resource use, as well as considering different viewpoints, cultures and attitudes. The curriculum is focused around our 5 Core Concepts: Human Development, Physical Processes, Human & Physical Interactions, Climate Change, and Sustainability.
As well as support from our fantastic team, there is also the opportunity to gain support from other areas in the trust. This includes CPD from the Geography unlocked programme, which offer bespoke sessions on how to develop your Geography teaching. Furthermore, you will also have the chance to develop yourself as a middle leader, by attending development days to network with directors and other middle leaders across the trust. Subject Directors are also available to provide specific support for new curriculum concepts and topics being covered.
Main responsibilities:
1. To assist the Head of Humanities in setting, monitoring and evaluating the subject pupil attainment targets to make a measurable contribution to whole school targets and student progress.
2. To act as a role model in leading subject staff through their own high-quality teaching, continuous professional development and professional presence in the department.
3. To assist the Head of Humanities in curriculum development to ensure the delivery of an appropriate, comprehensive, high quality and cost-effective curriculum programme.
4. To assist the Head of Humanities in providing regular feedback for subject colleagues in a way which recognises good practice and supports their progress against performance management objectives resulting in a tangible impact on student learning and progress.
