Applicants are invited for the post of Speciality Doctor in Critical care and Anaesthesia. The post holder will join a team of 4 specialty doctors, 2 trust grade registrars and ST4 Deanery trainees on a rolling 1 in 8 rota. The primary responsibility would be to provide senior resident on call cover for critical care. They would join a second tier of junior resident in ICU comprising of Core trainees in Anaesthesia, IMT, ACCS and trust grade SHOs. Based on candidates previous anaesthetic experience they may be able to take part in anaesthetic sessions during the non-oncall period, providing anaesthesia for elective and emergency surgeries.The post holder will be expected to provide immediate care to critically ill patients and be able to perform procedures including managing airway emergencies, stabilisation, insertion of invasive vascular access and perform critical care transfers, independently. They would be expected to contribute to teaching, training, mortality and morbidity meetings and other ICU related educational & governance activities. Main duties of the job The post holder with join a friendly and supportive team comprising of 8 ICU consultants and 1 Specialist. The Unit was designed in house and forms part of the modern Foundation Wing. It offers a spacious and well lit environment with excellent ergonomics to ensure an optimal experience for both patients and staff. It also boasts excellent facilities for teaching and training including a seminar room with conferencing facilities. The Unit functions as a combined ITU and HDU for both medical and surgical specialties and currently operates to a maximum dependency of 10 level 3 patients, with the intention of gradually increasing capacity over the coming years. Job responsibilities The primary responsibility will be on providing resident on call cover on a 1 in 8 rota as the senior airway trained resident doctor on shift for ICU. 1. Assess and manage patients in the critical care units and associated areas at the level of ST4 equivalent or above. 2. Provide on-call senior ICU resident cover on a 1:8 rota 3. Provide independent immediate care to critically ill patients including managing airways emergencies with support from on call team, stabilise and transfer. 4. Provide direct supervision for junior resident in ICU, reporting to consultant on call for ICU 5. Provide anaesthesia for ASA 1-3 patients independently in theatres on non on-call weeks. Person Specification Qualifications/Training Essential • Full registration with the GMC and a licence to practice ICM • A minimum of 4 years of postgraduate training experience since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which at least 2 years should be in intensive care medicine and 2 years in Anaesthesia ALS/ ACLS or equivalent • Primary FRCA/ EDAIC/ MRCP or equivalent Desirable • Higher medical degree • Additional training in areas relevant to ICM (such as Echocardiography) • Final FRCA/ FFICM/ EDIC Experience Essential • At least 4 years of fulltime postgraduate training experience (or equivalent for less than full time trainees) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which at least 2 years should be in intensive care medicine and 2 years in Anaesthesia Desirable • Experience of working in Specialty doctor, senior clinical fellow or Registrar post Skills and Knowledge Essential • Experienced in assessment, stabilisation and transfer of critically ill patients Experienced in performing procedures in ICU and anaesthesia at ST4 level or above Demonstrate sound clinical knowledge in the specialty and able to apply in the job Experienced in making clinical decision, managing risk and seeking help appropriately Able to adapt and work in different clinical settings relevant to the post • Experience of teaching undergraduate and post graduate trainees Able to supervise and support junior residents Ability to undertake formal teaching sessions for juniors • Able to organise and manage clinical care Able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and demonstrate leadership qualities during out of hours work • Evidence of significant contribution to successful teamwork Able to work effectively in a team • Good spoken and written English.
