ABOUT THE ROLE Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will support the Principal Investigator in the delivery of research activity focused on ocean circulation and ice shelf melting in the Bellingshausen Sea. Using data collected by ship you will analyse water masses in the region, calculate the concentrations of meltwater derived from the ice shelves and determine the pathways of warm water to, and meltwater away, from the ice shelves. You will prepare the results for publication, submit them to high quality disciplinary journals and present them at relevant conferences. The role is fixed term, with a duration on one year, starting on 1 April 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter. ABOUT THE TEAM This Research Project is being delivered within the Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/about-us/academic-departments/geography-and-environmental-sciences/research/) and contributes to the Future of Ice on Earth Peak of Research Excellence (https://www.northumbria.ac.uk/research/1/our-peaks-of-excellence/future-of-ice-on-earth/). The Department comprises almost one hundred academic and postdoctoral research staff, include a Cold Environments Research Group that leads projects around the world to monitor and analyse the response of cold landscapes, to recent and future climate change, covering mountain glaciers, snow properties on land and on sea ice, Arctic permafrost zones, the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets and their surrounding oceans. ABOUT YOU Applicants should hold, or anticipate the ward of, a PhD in Physical Oceanography or closely related discipline and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of shipboard oceanographic data. Prior knowledge of the regional oceanography of the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica, is essential, given the short duration of the post.
