Job Introduction
BBC Scotland News is at the forefront of delivering high-quality journalism to audiences across Scotland and beyond. As the News Controller, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the editorial vision and strategy for the department.
This is an opportunity to lead a talented team of journalists, ensuring that our news output reflects the diversity and vibrancy of Scotland's communities. You will oversee the newsroom's content across Digital, TV and radio, and uphold the BBC's commitment to impartiality. We are looking for an inclusive and inspiring leader who can galvanize teams to deliver the highest quality journalism to audiences across country in new and innovative ways.
Main Responsibilities
• Develop and implement a strategic vision to deliver high-quality, distinctive news content across multiple platforms
• Lead and communicate the newsroom's strategy to internal and external stakeholders, staff, and unions
• Ensure audience-focused, authoritative services that uphold the highest editorial standards and comply with BBC guidelines
• Develop content and formats which appeal to new audiences, reflects changing audience habits and keeps us ahead of our competitors
• Promote diversity in all decisions regarding on- and off-air staff
• Oversee budget management and ensure savings targets are met
• Manage key risks, including health, safety, and legal obligations, ensuring proper training and processes are in place
• Represent the BBC at a senior level and lead the implementation of major BBC projects
Are You The Right Candidate?
• Extensive editorial experience in News, with a deep understanding of the political, social and cultural landscape in Scotland
• Evidence of creative thinking, an innovative approach to delivering news, and the ability to foster and encourage an ideas-led culture
• A proven track record in leading large and complex teams in a fast-paced environment, and a media landscape which requires adaptability to constant change
• Adept at managing numerous and diverse senior and executive level stakeholders, often operating under tight timescales and with competing priorities
• A convincing and persuasive communicator, able to influence teams as well as senior stakeholders, both internal and external
• Significant understanding of current markets, trends and issues within the news industry and wider broadcast sector, and a deep knowledge of news output across the whole of the BBC, as well as that of competitors
