The Rock Deformation Laboratory invites applications for the position of post-doctoral research associate to work on a NERC funded grant. In this project, we will measure earthquake size distributions in laboratory experiments during frictional sliding. Specifically, we will address the hypothesis that the number of small events relative to large events are related to intrinsic frictional properties. The laboratory study is part of a larger project involving the modelling, observation and social science related to induced seismicity associated with industry focused on the green transition, such as geothermal and carbon capture and storage. The larger project involves Imperial College, University of Bristol, University of Manchester, University of Edinburgh and will provide extensive opportunity for cross disciplinary interactions with the other groups. You should have a PhD in Geology or Geophysics (awarded or pending). This is a fixed term post for 12 months. If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
