Operations Director – Cost Consultancy
Local Government and Communities South East: Cost and Commercial Lead
The opportunity
As part of the Local Government and Communities sector that operates across England and Wales, you will be integral to the exciting development plans of the South East Region. Working across the sector, on projects and programmes in Local Government, Residential and Regeneration, Sports and Leisure, Universities, Arts, Culture and Heritage, and Blue Light.
You will lead the Cost and Commercial Management Discipline (including interface with Building Surveying and Strategic Commercial Advisory) across the Local Government Business Unit in the South East, working alongside the Project and Programme Management Lead, forming part of the operational leadership team in the South. You will take responsibility for end-to-end service delivery, often in respect to large and complex projects, portfolios, and programmes. You will lead the development of the Cost and Commercial Service strategy to support growth in the region. You will identify opportunities to grow our service lines to support the needs of our clients.
The successful candidate will interlink with the CCM discipline lead for Local Government and Communities and the other CCM regional leads to coordinate services, resource planning, training and development, and share service excellence. Reporting into the Local Government and Communities South regional lead.
Your responsibilities will include:
1. Contributes to the development of strategic management plans.
2. Providing line management and overseeing recruitment.
3. Manages resources, driving the achievement of regional objectives in accordance with BU requirements, compliance, and regulatory frameworks, ensuring effective commercial business practices, tangible operational productivity, and improvements.
4. Leads the Quality Assurance across the discipline, ensuring that all teams comply with the Mace Way process.
5. Leads teams of professionals providing services on large projects or technical specialists recognized as an expert in their own area of expertise.
6. Responsible for managing senior level customer relationships for the region.
7. Responsible for strategic client engagement, identifying leads and opportunities, supporting regional/BU teams in winning work and bidding.
8. Responsible for deploying the Mace Way standards within the region linking best practice back into the BU/Global Centre of Excellence and Community.
9. Responsible for meeting client service expectations; manages multiple client and partner relationships, and engages clients on the subject of our service offering.
10. Communicates internally and externally regarding success in the Service Line, best practice, and innovation.
11. Identifying, coaching, and mentoring talent; supporting professional development and mobility.
12. Contributes to assurance and audit regime across the BU to ensure service excellence against those standards and that lessons learned are captured and fed back into the regionals and BU leadership.
13. Contributes to business growth and market positioning through sales and/or growth of accounts or relationships - driving a future-proofed, sustainable business.
14. Contributes to management of contract and commercial procedures and Business Unit Budget / P&L.
15. Able to identify and analyze business opportunities and risks – seeing problems early.
16. Detailed understanding of construction technology, planning, delivery, site logistics, sustainability; commercial & legal / contract issues.
17. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

19. Persuading and influencing junior colleagues and an ability to delegate tasks to others not within the line management structure.

About you
You have a bachelor’s degree and are a member of a relevant institute. You have a track record of winning and delivering work for public sector clients. You have a good working knowledge of contracts, estimating, valuations, cost reporting, and financial modeling. You have experience in negotiating, influencing, and communication skills to command professional respect at all levels.
You are digitally savvy, can build lasting client relationships, and lead high-performing teams within a commercial environment. You will have a cost consultancy practice and be hungry to grow your career and enjoy the opportunities Mace has to offer.
