- 24 months The Infrastructure and Operations team within our IT & Digital Directorate is expanding We are hiring a Senior Linux Engineer to become part of our collaborative culture, diverse teams, and well-connected community.
If you are passionate about delivering excellent customer experience whilst maintaining the security of the University and those that consume our services, we are keen to hear from you About the Department Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure (HCI) is core to the service delivery of the IT&D Directorate, enabling our students and colleagues to have a seamless access to systems and services at the University by maintaining Enterprise virtualisation, storage systems, backup and archiving.
In the past 2 years the HCI team have delivered a virtualisation modernisation project that has replatformed 80% of the Universities workload to Azure and SaaS platforms, a modernisation of the Linux estate and a standardisation on RHEL over alternatives, the migration of Research Data Storage from on-premises to Azure native, the migrations of legacy file shares to Azure native solutions and much more About the Role As the primary Linux specialist, you will report to the Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure Technical Team Lead and join the team of 5 engineers.
As the Senior Linux Engineer, you will be part of the Servers & Storage team within HCI, working alongside the Database and Identity & Access Management teams.
This is your opportunity to bring your expertise in Linux Administration to the University, and also work with wider technologies i.e.
virtualisation, cloud, research, high performance compute (to name a few).
Managing the modernisation of our Linux offering to the University, you will drive the transformation phase of moving (where appropriate) to Azure native solutions.
As the Senior Linux Engineer you will be responsible for ensuring the current environment is secure and available, whilst looking at modernising and simplifying the estate through automation and migrations to alternative solutions (where appropriate).
Key Responsibilities Demonstrate a strong technical background and provide technical authority in one or more of the specialist focus areas to deliver sound technical systems management.
Provision and upgrade business critical infrastructure systems, including hardware installations and software configurations and pro-active monitoring of infrastructure systems to identify issues before they cause incidents and impact services for students and staff.
Horizon scanning demonstrate acute awareness of sector trends and emerging technologies, reviewing options and being confident in making recommendations for developments to the senior management team.
Technically lead and take ownership of infrastructure primarily responsible for managing, regarding but not limited to infrastructure design, configuration, security and compliance, DR, documentation etc.
Develop and maintain relevant end to end service monitoring which supports efficient service delivery, including design, configuration, implementation, and service delivery.
Work closely with the Service Management Office to ensure ITIL maturity and efficient process integration, particularly for Incident, Problem, and Change management.
Support strategic aims of the organisation, such as shift left improvements, first contact resolution and customer satisfaction focus are reflected in the day-to-day delivery of the services.
Support the delivery of IT&D and University projects by leading on work packages, planning, and organising work ensuring efficient and effective achievement of objectives and timescales.
Risk & Issue Management and Ownership: Identify, escalate, and assist with the work to mitigate key process and operational risks relating to the effective delivery of the University IT services for which the role is accountable.
Key skills, knowledge and experience Demonstrable experience of working with IT teams across traditional on-premises & Cloud environments, with close alignment and engagement, supporting Linux Infrastructure and implementing new enhancements.
Deployment and running of monitoring and configuration tools required to effectively manage the infrastructure estate/ develop and implement reporting to provide oversight and governance.
Experience with Linux servers in on-premises virtualised environments and (Cloud AWS & Azure) across all OS distros including Red hat, Ubuntu, SuSe and CentOS.
Experience with configuration management and application deployment software such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef and BigFix.
Deployment of missing security agents to Linux servers & ensure servers adhere to approved hardening standards and OS versions roadmaps.
Provide direct technical support and ensure compliance with university technical & security standards.
Experience of owning and leading technical work streams and providing high-level support to multiple and complex projects or priorities, ensuring high quality and timely delivery.
Previous experience of working within a structured IT service management environment (incident management, change management, problem management etc.) Strong inter-personal and networking skills, with the ability to establish positive and effective working relationships with diverse groups of stakeholders.
Exceptionally good problem solving and analytical skills, with the ability to work proactively and collaboratively to resolve issues.
