Description CONTROLLERS Controllers ensure that the firm meets all the financial control and reporting obligations of a global, regulated, and public financial institution. Our professionals measure the profitability of, and risks associated with, every aspect of the firm's business. Controllers also ensure that the firm's activities are conducted in compliance with the regulations governing transactions in the financial markets. BUSINESS UNIT The Controllers group is responsible for safeguarding the firm's assets: to help maintain the integrity of Goldman Sachs' finances and expenditures. Through careful consideration and analyses of firm finances, objectives and strategies, we ensure that the firm's businesses continue to be profitable and efficiently run. Controllers also ensure that all business practices are in compliance with financial and regulatory requirements worldwide. Since contact with virtually every part of the firm is essential to Controllers, professionals in the department experience Goldman Sachs businesses, products, and sophisticated technology systems in depth. Direct Hedge Funds, Hedge Funds Strategies, Private Equity Group teams within Controllers support the alternative investments within Goldman Sachs Asset Management division with oversight over complex private funds. OUR IMPACT We're a team of specialists charged with managing the firm's Firmwide Policy for New Activity and the associated New Activity Committees. We coordinate the assessment, approval and introduction of new businesses or activities into or within the firm. Our work contributes directly to the firm's success. YOUR IMPACT The primary focus of a New Activity Vice President is to provide leadership in the identification, analysis and implementation of new products, introduction of new activities and significant growth initiatives globally, with an emphasis on the impact in the first and second lines of defence (1LoD and 2LoD, respectively) (e.g., Businesses, Legal, Compliance, Controllers, Engineering, Risk, Operations, and Tax areas). This position provides the opportunity to develop a detailed understanding of the various products traded, and activities conducted, by the firm’s major European entities as well as the firm globally. Career paths can vary based on the interests and capabilities of the individuals selected. Provide leadership in the coordination of analysis associated with the introduction of new products and activities between the 1LoD and 2LoD Develop rapid understanding of new products and activities and identify relevant structural and implementation issues (i.e., where and with whom can the product be traded, how to monitor risk, how to price the product, how to book and settle transactions, how to account for the product, system support requirements, associated reputational and suitability issues and their mitigants, ensuring an activity is conducted in compliance with UK, EU and applicable global regulations and laws, etc.) Develop and document procedures for processing and monitoring transactions through work with relevant traders, investment bankers, line managers, lawyers, compliance officers, etc. Assist in documenting business justification for products or activities and presenting analysis to senior management for approval PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Good communications skills; both written and oral Excellent analytical skills Ability to understand and develop process flows Ability to conceptualize and take a broad look at a product, yet simultaneously being able to understand the detailed implications on a variety of areas Control oriented Ability to defend views when challenged by others through effective communication of rationale Ability to get along with people at all levels of the organization Ability to work on many projects simultaneously ABOUT GOLDMAN SACHS At Goldman Sachs, we commit our people, capital and ideas to help our clients, shareholders and the communities we serve to grow.
