The Role We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Coastal Model Developer to join our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in enhancing Fathom’s coastal flood modelling capabilities by developing, simulating, and validating cutting-edge models. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced coastal modeller to help shape the design and implementation of an ambitious roadmap aimed at high-resolution global coastal flood risk assessment, covering present-day and future climate scenarios. Key Responsibilities: Design, construct, and simulate coastal flood modelling frameworks. Incorporate innovative research and data into the modelling framework to enable computationally efficient high-resolution predictions globally. Prepare comprehensive documentation of modelling methodologies, assumptions and validations processes. Stay up-to-date with the latest research and developments in coastal flood modelling. Support the preparation and delivery of reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders. Play a key role in project management, reporting, and communication, including authoring peer-reviewed publications. Requirements: Master’s degree or higher in a relevant field, with expertise in coastal processes and flood dynamics. Proven expertise in developing, simulating and evaluating coastal hydrodynamic models (e.g., SFINCs, SCHISM, ADCIRC). Proficiency in programming for statistical analysis, model development and automation. Experience with spatial data manipulation tools (e.g. GIS). Familiarity with machine learning techniques for emulating complex models. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to various audiences. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team and independently as required. A proactive, forward-thinking mindset, with a passion for adopting new tools and methods. Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work. An understanding of the physical drivers of coastal flooding and how they may be influenced by future climate scenarios. Preferred requirements: Advanced programming skills in open source software such as Python or R. Experience using parallel computing environments for model execution. Practical experience implementing machine learning approaches in physical process modelling. Experience using QGIS for spatial data analysis. Knowledge of risk modelling principles and their application to coastal environments.
