About the role
National Energy System Operator (NESO) recognises the potential of bright and talented individuals, and we encourage you to join us as Great Britain’s energy system undergoes an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
We are now recruiting for the team to lead and develop the RESP role. It’s a great opportunity to join us as we set out to help decarbonise the UK in a local community-based way. A key part of our initial work is around the upcoming RIIO-ED3 price control, run by Ofgem, which will begin on 1 April 2028. We have been asked by Ofgem to feed-in to this price control on a number of areas (this output has initially been called transitional RESP (tRESP)). You can find the specifics of these in the recently published Ofgem ED3 Framework Consultation. We are now recruiting for a RESP Projects Lead (Price Controls) to be a part of this work. Once completed, it is our expectation that they will form a part of our enduring team working on Policy, Regulation and Governance.
As a RESP Projects Lead (Price Controls) you will play a crucial role leading the development of parts of this project, particularly around our core priority areas of establishing regional pathways for ED3, agreeing common planning assumptions and advising Ofgem on strategic investment priorities. You will apply your technical energy and system planning understanding and skill in leading engagement with technical audiences and coordinating technical and data interfaces with the central and other regional teams in developing tRESP.
This role can be based from Wokingham, Warwick, Glasgow or London, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities
* Take ownership and understand technical specific aspects of the tRESP workstream.
* Be involved in bottom-up data collection.
* Provide technical insight into discussions around modelling for tRESP pathways.
* Feed-in to discussions around strategic investment need, particularly considering the bigger price control picture.
* To feed into the development of our engagement programme for tRESP.
* Work with the team to develop content, agendas and discussion areas for technical working groups.
* In time, you will be expected to lead some of these groups, depending on your areas of specialism.
* Lead bilaterals with targeted stakeholders to gain whole system/place-based insights.
* To proactively manage how the tRESP work feeds in and aligns with the development of our enduring RESP function.
* Feed into discussions on enduring RESP methodology.
* Own interdependencies between the two workstreams and proactively address/mitigate.
About you
It is essential you have experience in one of the two following areas for this role:
* Experience of working on price controls, ideally for the energy distribution network, but we will consider candidates from energy transmission/other regulated industries.
* Experience of working on forecasting, particularly applying common methods and assumptions and validation of data.
You should also have a combination of the following experience:
* An understanding of the ‘whole energy’ system – with experience in one of the energy vectors (gas and/or electricity networks, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, transport decarbonisation, etc)
* Ability to translate complex and technical information into easily understandable messaging for non-technical audiences.
* Experience of communicating with, and influencing, internal and external stakeholders at a range of levels.
* Project management, coordination and planning skills to ensure that deadlines are met, governance is adhered to, stakeholders are effectively engaged and high-quality process and outputs are achieved.
What you'll get
A competitive salary between £58,000 - £68,000pa – dependent on experience and capability.
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on company performance, 26 days annual leave as standard and a competitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
As we work towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more affordable future for all, we also work towards creating a place for our teammates to belong, with professional and personal growth and positive well-being.
* Full support and career-development resources to expand your skills, enhance your expertise, and maximise your potential along your career journey.
* A diverse and inclusive community of belonging, where teammates are empowered to bring ideas to the table.
* Generous Total Rewards Plan – comprising of health, finance and wealth, work/life balance, and career benefits.
