Job Title: Mechanical Estates Manager\n Band: 7\n Hours: 37.5 hours per week, on-call rota and any ad-hoc requirements\n Department: Estates\n Division: Facilities and Estates\n Location / Hospital Site: Brighton, Sussex\n Responsible to: Head of Estates / Deputy Head of Estates\n Accountable to: Operational Team and Trades staff, Specialist Technicians, Estates Supervisors\n Key Responsibilities:\nOversee engineering mechanical services for the hospital site.\nEnsure estates services meet the Trust’s operational needs, delivering efficient, high-quality services.\nProvide technical advice to the Head of Estates, Trust staff, external contractors, and consultants.\nEnsure compliance with Statutory Standards, Health & Safety Guidance, COSHH, and NHS Executive Directives.\nManage engineering maintenance and act as Trust Clerk of Works for site inspections, testing, and commissioning.\nEnsure maintenance, testing, and commissioning of specialist services (piped medical gases, theatre air testing, boiler house, etc.).\nMonitor and review the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) system, ensuring statutory and mandatory compliance.\nLead governance issues, including incident/complaints management, risk assessments, and Health & Safety compliance.\nAct as Authorised Person (AP) for relevant building systems (e.g., medical gases, HVAC).\nImplement and maintain site asset register, overseeing minor schemes and Capital Works.\nMonitor performance, develop objectives, and conduct performance reviews for staff.\nEnsure adherence to Trust policies on sickness, attendance, dress code, and conduct, with disciplinary actions where necessary.\nMaintain and update divisional policies and procedures in line with Estates legislation and Trust protocols.\nAssist in planning, developing, and implementing estates strategies (addressing backlog maintenance, non-capital works, energy efficiency, etc.).\nParticipate in emergency on-call roster and support operational staff outside regular hours.\nAssist in producing reports and supporting project work.\nEngage in Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses relevant to the role.Experience/Qualifications:\nProven engineering management experience, including staff management/supervisory responsibilities.\nPrevious experience and understanding of Estates maintenance.\nPerformance management and operational management experience.\nExperience and knowledge of technical developments, financial procedures, and statutory regulations.\nEducated to at least HNC level or equivalent in an engineering subject, or relevant/appropriate previous experience.\nRelevant NHS experience (desirable).\nRelevant management qualification to Diploma level or equivalent.\nAP for any building system.Skills:\nCommunication Skills: Excellent oral and written communication skills.\nAnalytical and Judgemental Skills: Able to work on own initiative, interpret complex policies, and implement change.\nPlanning and Organisational Skills: Ability to prioritise workloads for yourself and others.\nPeople Management and Development: Ability to work across boundaries, build teams, and manage performance.\nIT Skills: Good knowledge of IT systems and a range of software.\nPersonal Qualities: Self-motivated, confident, leadership-oriented, enthusiastic, and committed to further training.\nBehaviours & Attitudes: Demonstrates behaviours and attitudes that support the Trust’s mission of “Excellent care every time,” underpinned by values of compassion, communication, teamwork, respect, professionalism, and inclusion
