Main duties of the job
We are seeking an Assistant Psychologist to join our experienced team of motivated professionals consisting of Clinical Psychologists, Learning Disability Nurses, Therapists, Community Support Workers, and Psychiatrists, to work closely with partnership agencies to provide a very well-respected service to children, young people, and their families. The team combines clinical, teaching, and research skills to deliver up-to-date, evidence-based interventions for children with neurodevelopmental conditions, who also have moderate to severe mental health difficulties or present with behaviours of distress or challenge to others.
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated, and highly organised psychology graduate with some relevant experience working with young people and families, who works well within different systems, demonstrates high-level written and verbal communication skills, and will be keen to use supervision and training to develop assessment and clinical skills.
The post holder will be supported to form links with the other Assistant Psychologists in the service and to undertake CPD activities.

As an Assistant Psychologist, you will contribute to the service by conducting 1:1 therapeutic interventions, carrying out cognitive assessments and clinical assessments under supervision. You will contribute to case discussion and formulation, carry out patient observations in various settings, collect and analyse data, prepare reports, have involvement with team developments, and deliver training.
Person Specification
* Honours degree at 2:1 or above in Psychology, or equivalent. Eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartership with the BPS.
* Experience of working with children or young people/adults with complex needs. Basic knowledge of databases, research skills, and methodology. Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Experience of group work and/or individual therapeutic contact. Ability to apply existing psychological knowledge to a health context. An understanding of psychology applied to health care. Knowledge of recent developments in mental health provision for Autistic children and young people, and those who experience behaviours of distress and challenges to others.
* Relevant clinical and research skills. To be able to communicate effectively under pressure and maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times. To be able to provide and receive complex sensitive or contentious information in a potentially highly emotive atmosphere. To be able to work with resistance to ideas. High standard of report writing. To assimilate complex information and use reflective/analytic thinking, to apply psychological perspectives in work with clients. Ability to be flexible and cope with multiple demands. Capable of using initiative and organise work to agreed goals. Ability to work independently and know when to ask for and use supervision, identifying when there is need for advice and using supervision at agreed intervals. Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team. Skills and ability to liaise effectively with other agencies and professionals. Information technology skills. To have highly developed IT skills and good working knowledge of statistical packages.
* Ability to contain and work with organisational stress. Ability to work autonomously, setting appropriate goals, in accordance with professional ethics guidelines and Trust policies. Understanding of equality of opportunity and related policies and procedures. Ability to endure prolonged periods of concentration for extended client therapy sessions. Able to sit in constrained positions for a substantial period of working time. Respectful approach to service users, families, carers, colleagues, and other professionals. * Further post graduate training in relevant area of professional psychology, health and social care practice, and/or research design and analysis. Training in mental health related clinical work (e.g., IAPT training, systemic practitioner training, CBT training). Completed MSc/PhD in a subject related to child mental health/child development.
* Experience of the use of psychometric tests. Experience of teaching other professionals. Experience of working in schools. Experience/knowledge of working in a multi-ethnic community and of working with interpreters. Experience of working with children with challenging behaviour, their families, and wider networks. Acquaintance with parenting literature. Knowledge of current developments in CAMHS. Experience of working with children or young people/adults with neurodevelopmental difficulties in a health or Mental Health setting. Knowledge of current developments in therapy with children and adolescents who experience mental health difficulties. Knowledge of current guidelines and recommendations of assessment and treatment of Autistic adolescents and children with co-morbid mental health difficulties.
* Ability to teach basic CAMHS concepts. Presentation/teaching skills.
* Demonstrate support for the values and beliefs of the Care Group and those of the Trust.
