In this role of a part time weekend Chef, experience in healthcare is not essential, but is preferable as catering in a hospital setting can create some interesting challenges. You will already have relevant catering qualifications to at least NVQ Level 2 or equivalent and Level 2 in food hygiene. You will have a good understanding of food allergens and dietary requirements.
You will report to the Head Chef and together with your colleagues you will ensure that patients, staff and visitors are offered tasty and nutritious meals which are prepared to a high standard. You will be supported by your senior management team, together with your colleagues, you will ensure that the healthcare team are supported to deliver high quality care. You will receive full training, support and guidance to enable you to feel confident and comfortable in your role. As part of this you will need to complete some bespoke on line training and face to face vocal de-escalation training (BRIT) to allow you access to the wards. You will also need to complete an enhanced DBS check.
The duties of the job role are to:
Undertake the planning, preparation and cooking of meals, taking account of any special requests or dietary requirements within the unit.
Take full shift responsibility for the catering operation (If lone working).
Ensure the cost-effective and efficient control of stock including placing orders for food products and the checking/reconciliation of deliveries. Ensure that wastage is minimised.
Assist the Head Chef by researching and creating new menus ensuring meals are of a high quality and compliment healthy eating guidelines.
Supervise assigned catering staff ensuring their quality of work continues to meet required operational standards and the company’s Assured Safe Catering policies and guidelines.
Organise and prioritise own work within established procedures, referring complex issues to senior management staff.
To serve our patients at meal times.
Hours: 2 days per week (15 hrs)
Friday or Saturday hours: 10:15 - 18:15
Sunday hours: 9:30-17:30
A set rolling rota will be a combination of these 3 days to be discussed at interview.
Holiday cover will also be available during the week.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
City & Guilds or NVQ2 equivalent.
Preferably level 3 in food hygiene or basic food hygiene with intentions of gaining a level 3.
Knowledge of food Allergens & dietary requirements.
Experience within a professional kitchen environment.
The role holder works within a busy kitchen environment using a variety of equipment where many routine duties require a degree of sustained physical effort. The role holder will be required to undertake specialist dietary training, as well as partaking in Priory’s mandatory training programme.

Nelson House is a modern and spacious 28 bedded locked rehabilitation recovery mental health service providing care for men of adult working age with mental illness. By having a focus on the development of skills for independence the unit provides a positive step for patients, many whose next step will be living in the community. It helps patients learn new ways of managing their conditions and symptoms with the aim of helping to prevent any future relapse. For patients with challenging behaviours, Nelson House helps them to learn skills to change their response to anxiety and distress.
