About this client/child: Archie who has recently turned 10, adores being read to, loves crafts, especially painting money boxes. He likes cooking too. He visited Disneyland recently and loves everything connected with Disney. He also enjoys his Kumon maths classes too (yes, really!) His older brother Reggie is a cheeky and adventurous 12-year-old who is increasingly becoming more independent. Archie has a heart condition called Long QT syndrome which is under control using beta blockers and a pacemaker. Archie has profound bilateral hearing loss, but cochlear implants help him greatly. He also has a movement disorder, making his mobility and speech severely restricted. He cannot sit unaided for any length of time, crawl or walk. Archie is non-verbal but expresses himself very well using a high-tech speech generating device. He is orally fed, with some foods mashed but increasingly Archie is tolerating normal foods. Archie is a very happy boy and continues to make great progress with the help of a large team of doctors, physios, conductors and speech and language therapists. The family are in the process of adapting their home to include a lift and ceiling hoists. The adaptations will be fully complete by August/September 2024.
Overview of role: During the week, the SEN Nanny/Manny will play an active role in all of Archie’s appointments, attending them with his mum; he has regular physiotherapy. You really will be his mum’s right-hand person! Reggie attends prep school until September 2025, when he goes to boarding school, and Archie attends a Conductive Education school locally. In term-time, you’ll help Archie get ready for and take him to school. Back at home, there are nursery duties to be carried out. The family has a full-time housekeeper, but the nanny/manny is responsible for the children’s laundry and batch cooking. When you have collected Archie from school, you’ll help him with his personal care, organise snacks, help him complete homework, feed him dinner and most importantly play with him and have fun! In the school holidays, there is time for organising lots of fun activities. Occasionally you may collect Reggie from school but most of the focus will be on Archie. There is the opportunity for overtime to cover some earlier starts, evening babysitting and occasional weekends as mutually agreed. £20.00 gross / hour.
Who this job would suit: The right person will have a warm and caring nature, be well organised, responsible, have a natural affinity working with SEN children or young adults and a sense of playfulness. You should be confident working with a child with movement difficulties, and ideally an interest in therapy. You also need to be comfortable working alongside mum at times.
What’s great about this job: This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a loving family home. We have placed five nannies with this family over the years and they have all loved the job. The most recent Nanny is leaving after 3 years for personal reasons but prior to that their nanny was with them for 8 years. You will have the chance to get involved in Archie’s online NAPA physio sessions, will be given annual travel insurance and will have the opportunity to travel with the family, including visits to NAPA Boston and London.
