Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Have 24 hour responsibility for managing staff and budgets to ensure the standards and quality of care and the environment in which they are delivered are maintained and improved.
Ensure high quality, evidence-based care is offered to patients and, in collaboration with the Matron, identify the common issues which affect the quality of care devising clear action plans to address any shortcomings ensuring agreed action is undertaken. Includes developing, implementing and maintaining patient care policies and procedures, clinical guidelines and protocols where appropriate.
In collaboration with all members of multi-professional team, ensure that the baby and family has a satisfactory experience by evaluating patient processes and redesigning the pathway of care - including external agencies and also other hospitals.
In conjunction with the Appraisal/Individual Performance Review process, undertake training needs analysis for a defined group of staff and share with the Practice Development Nurse for collation annually, to contribute to and inform the Neonatal and Childrens training plan.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
* 1st Level Registered Nurse
* Current NMC Registration
* Possession of a degree in nursing or healthcare
* Neonatal Critical Care Course
* Current NLS provider
* Evidence of continued professional development
* Possession of a teaching and/or mentoring course
* Successful completion of maths test
Experience
Essential criteria
* Management/leadership in a neonatal intensive care area
* Ability to manage the clinical area or ward efficiently and effectively
* Experience in managing staff and providing feedback
* Experience of risk assessment and management
* Ability to lead change and lead new ways of working
* Supervision of non-registered staff, pre-registration and post basic students
* Evidence of ability to mentor
Communication and relationship skills
