Junior Clinical Research Fellow - Psychiatry
Join to apply for the Junior Clinical Research Fellow - Psychiatry role at Sheffield Health and Social Care NHS FT.
Sheffield Health and Social Care has been selected as one of 15 sites working on the Mood Disorders Workstream of the Mental Health Mission. This project aims to increase local clinical research capacity by expanding our ability to recruit to and deliver clinical trials in mood disorders. It will increase future capacity by training early-stage doctors in clinical research delivery, with a focus on developing the skills needed to work on commercial clinical trials.
This project will build on our existing strengths as a centre of excellence in mood disorders research. We have recently established a Clinical Research Facility (CRF) at the Longley Centre, equipped with the necessary equipment, processes, and facilities to support mood disorder research. This facility includes a Psychedelic Treatment Suite and is covered by a Schedule 1 drug license for the use of novel psychoactive investigational products. We are currently delivering 3 clinical trials using these facilities, with a further 4 trials at various stages of setup for the future.
This post will help us meet the Mental Health Mission aim of expanding commercial clinical trials capacity by supporting the research delivery team at the Clinical Research Facility. You will be working within a team of research nurses, admin colleagues, research managers, psychedelic therapists, clinical trials pharmacists, and senior medics.
You will have an important role in pre-screening participants. Potential participants are identified through a network of GP practices and via a commercial partner who deploys social media advertising. Once potential participants are identified, you will review their medical records and contact them to explore possible eligibility. Later in the post, once the Mood Disorders Clinic is operational, these contacts will form a research-informed comprehensive mood disorders assessment with onward treatment recommendations to the GP, working under supervision from the clinical lead.
At SHSC, we prioritise the well-being and safety of both our service users and employees. It is our policy and a condition of employment that all employees must join the DBS Update Service. This service carries an annual fee, which employees are responsible for paying up front. However, employees may claim this cost back through the Trust's Employee Expenses Reimbursement Policy. For those requiring a Basic DBS check, it is necessary to register for a DBS Online Account.
You will assist the Clinical Lead to assess and consent potential participants. You will provide comprehensive physical examinations of our participants. You will be asked to interpret ECGs, blood test, and urinalysis results. You may be asked to acquire blood samples or provide supervision to our nursing staff who routinely complete this activity.
You will remain knowledgeable of our clinical trials eligibility criteria and will reassess our participants' ongoing eligibility for ongoing participation when prompted by trial protocols.
You will keep detailed, contemporaneous clinical records from these activities. You will assist in data entry ensuring that clinical information is reported to our commercial partners in accordance with Good Clinical Practice principles and trial protocols. You will investigate any discrepancies in the data and resolve inconsistencies.
You will provide medical follow-up to participants enrolled in our clinical trials. This will involve reviewing their mental state and physical health since their last visit, noting and exploring any changes that could represent an adverse event. Any adverse events will be assessed for severity and possible causality. All adverse events will be reported according to Good Clinical Practice guidance and trial protocols, and any severe events discussed with the Clinical Lead. You will undertake required trial-specific training, following which you will use clinician-rated outcome measures to gather data on severity of illness or emerging adverse events such as psychosis. Following training, you will use structured clinical tools to assess for any suicidality. If detected, you will undertake a psychiatric risk assessment and discuss your findings with the Clinical Lead.
