The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) Youth Volunteer Scheme would like to invite applications for the role of Volunteer Youth Instructor based at the following Community Fire Stations on a temporary basis:

4. Helensburgh
5. Kilwinning
6. Lerwick (Shetland)
7. Livingston
8. Methil
9. Peterhead
10. Stranraer
11. Tobermory
12. Wick
This is a volunteering opportunity, of approximately 1 evening per week for up to 3 hours, with occasional weekend activity.
The successful candidate(s) will be required to support the delivery of the SFRS Youth Volunteer Scheme. They will provide support, guidance, encouragement and advice to young people whilst developing their skills and knowledge.
They will engage with and mentor young people to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors and be sufficiently equipped with improved life skills. They will also ensure that young people have a practical understanding of the SFRS and are able to play supportive roles in preventative community safety by developing positive peer relationships.
Successful candidate(s) will also:
13. Contribute to the aims and outcomes of SFRS Youth Volunteer Scheme by supporting the Local Scheme Coordinator to deliver the programme to young people
14. Support the selection of young people wanting to participate in the programme
15. Provide support, guidance, encouragement and advice to young people as appropriate
16. Contribute to learning events and facilitate personal development of young people and assist with the delivery of lessons plans and activities from the SFRS YVS syllabus
17. Provide information on performance of young people to the Local Scheme Coordinator as required
18. Monitor the attendance of young people and participation of young people in events and activities
19. Communicate promptly and efficiently with Local Scheme Coordinators including raising any issues around timekeeping and availability
20. Assist the Local Scheme Coordinator with general administrative tasks as required
21. Ensure confidentiality and security of information is maintained during your time as a volunteer, or at any time afterwards, in line with the general data protection regulations
22. Assist with managing the wellbeing of young people in line with the SFRS policies and procedures and reporting any observations or concerns
23. Support and mentor newly appointed Volunteer Youth Instructors, Volunteers and colleagues sharing good practise where necessary
24. Any other responsibility deemed appropriate by the LSO/Prevention, Protection & Preparedness Directorate in support of the SFRS Youth Volunteer Scheme
Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
25. Experience of working with young people in either a personal or professional capacity
26. An ability to facilitate and support young peoples’ progress towards achieving the goals of the programme.
27. An awareness of the challenges, issues and barriers that young people face across diverse communities
28. An understanding of Health and Safety practices and processes
29. An understanding of Child protection and wellbeing practices and processes
30. A high level of confidentiality awareness
It is also desirable that applicants can evidence of knowledge and understanding of current operational procedures and have an awareness of the benefits of working with communities. Holding a Youth Work Qualification or working towards one together with basic ICT Skills would also be desirable.
The successful candidate(s) will be expected to complete all relevant training courses for this role.
This post is subject to the provision of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exclusions and Exemptions) Scotland Order. Successful candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme and are expected to maintain this while they are volunteering.
