Health Care Support Worker - Paediatrics
The post holder carries out assigned tasks, including care of patients, in support of, and supervised by a Registered Nurse.
Main duties of the job
1. Communicate with patients and their visitors in order to promote their comfort and well-being
2. Communication with other members of the organisation and respond appropriately
3. Assist with admission, transfer and discharge of patients.
4. Make unoccupied beds and occupied beds.
5. Assist patients out of bed, helping with dressing and undressing as required
6. Assist with manual handling and transferring of patients complying with the Trust Moving and Handling policy
7. Report Accidents/incidents to nurse in charge and complete appropriate Trust forms.
8. Chaperone Medical Staff.
9. Help with the serving of meals and drinks as required, and help collect used crockery etc.
10. Obtain & label specimens from patients as directed by nurse in charge (eg. body fluids, wound swabs).
11. Escort patients to other Wards/Departments at the direction of Nurse in Charge.
12. Assist with nursing procedures where extra help is needed, ie dressings, etc.
13. Assist in trials and use of new equipment.
14. Take and record temperatures, pulses, blood pressures and respirations, blood glucose, urine testing, at the direction of Nurse in Charge, when deemed competent
15. Adhere to the Trust uniform policy and maintain a professional image.
All of the above should be performed with due consideration of patients' privacy and
dignity and complying with the Trust Infection Control Policy. This includes adherence to hand washing policy and disposal of clinical waste.

Person Specification
EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING
* Level 2 or Level 3 (NVQ) in health and Social Care or equivalent relevant experience
* Willing to work towards Level 2 functional skills (Math & English)
* Care Certificate/working towards
Experience
* Experience of working with people, ideally in a front-line customer service role.
* Experience of providing person centred care.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCE
* An understanding of the importance of patient confidentially and privacy.
* Demonstrates a caring, compassionate and empathetic approach to patient's and colleagues, whilst having a professional approach.
* Recognise how patients and colleagues need to be treated with dignity and respect and can demonstrate these behaviours in their daily work.
* Good verbal and written English communication skills.
* The ability to respond with kindness and humanity to patients.
* A flexible and adaptable approach with the aptitude to work in a busy hospital healthcare setting.
* Willingness to undertake the mentorship of new Nursing Assistants after 12 months in post
* Basic knowledge of health and safety with an awareness of the importance of following Trust policies and procedures
* An appreciation of equality, diversity and inclusion and how this influences how care is provided to patients.
* A willingness to provide the highest standards of patient care including personal care.
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Good understanding of care needs relevant to patient's in a hospital setting to include: Eating and drinking, Dignity and respect, Communication/conflict resolution, Handwashing and infection control, Hygiene needs, Safeguarding
* Understands the limit and scope of their job role and the need to only do tasks they are trained to do.
* Knows when to escalate to a registered nurse when the situation is beyond their scope of practice.
