We are looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant Histopathologist at 10PAs, to join our team of high performing and productive consultants to provide a Cellular Pathology Service.
Candidates should have Full GMC registration (with a licence to practice) and be on the Histopathology Specialist Register or within 6 months of attaining their CCT or holding CESR.
Prospective candidates should hold the FRCPath or equivalent higher professional qualification. Your application will need to demonstrate experience and a willingness to participate in both hematopathology and breast pathology. Discussion for involvement in other areas may also be considered.
The Cellular Pathology Department is based on the site of Royal Derby Hospital. This is a very busy UKAS accredited department with an interesting, varied and growing workload, covering most specialities except medical renal biopsies, neuropathology and paediatric/neonatal pathology. The medical team consists of a team of 18 consultants and two specialty doctors.
Main duties of the job
Provision of comprehensive Cellular Pathology service to the users, including advice regarding appropriate specimen collection and investigations, interpretation of reports and the preparation of policies, procedures and guidelines.
Review and validation of laboratory reports.
Answer phone calls to and from clinical colleagues.
The department is committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate education.
A commitment to the autopsy service is also desirable.
To be jointly responsible for the supervision, training and management of any junior staff in the department.
To be jointly responsible in the smooth and efficient running of the cellular pathology department.
Take joint responsibility with colleagues for quality assurance within the department including taking part in national external quality assurance programmes.
To participate in the annual appraisal process.
Job responsibilities
The department currently receives approximately 47,000 surgical and 5,000 non-gynaecological cytology specimens per year. Additionally, following the reorganisation of the cervical screening programme, the department became one of 8 hubs nationwide for HPV testing and gynae cytology.
Subspecialist reporting is well developed with individuals reporting in at least 3 different areas.
Individual consultants are protected from excessive diagnostic workload by a workload management system that is based on a modified RCPath workload scoring system.
Each consultant Histopathologist in the department has sole use of a well-appointed office equipped with microscope and up to date IT facilities including the use of speech recognition software and proforma reporting (AES). Additionally, with the full implementation of digital pathology over the next 18 months, consultants should expect to have a digital workstation within the hospital and at home.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* GMC specialist registration (with CCT or CESR), or within 6 months of achieving Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Histopathology at time of interview. Candidates must have achieved CESR where applicable, at time of application.
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Fellowship of Royal College of Pathologist (FRCPath) or equivalent
* Knowledge and understanding of the CPD scheme of the Royal College of Pathologists (or equivalent)
* Higher research Degree (MD or PhD)
Clinical Experience
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining a UK CCT
* UK experience in cellular pathology
Management
* Commitment to Continuing Professional Development & the requirements of clinical governance
* Develop SOP and guidelines
* Management experience in clinical leadership
* Attended a management course for consultants
Teaching
* Experience of & commitment to teaching undergraduates & postgraduates including cellular pathology Specialist trainee
* Experience in Teaching/Training of junior staff
Research/ Audit
* Experience of & commitment to clinical audit
