Job summary
Junior Sister/ Charge Nurse,
Department: Ward 21
Band 6 pro rata if part-time
Hours: per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
Ward 21 is a 27 bed unit within the surgical division at MKUH. The ward is unique that it is split into two different areas, one area cares for elective orthopaedics and the other area cares for emergency gynaecology, urology, and emergency surgery. We are looking for an experienced nurse to give high standards of care to patients within most disciplines of surgery including but not limited to: orthopaedics, gynaecology, urology, and general surgery. We work across several multidisciplinary teams with expertise from several additional services within the hospital so effective communication is vital to give timely holistic care. We provide care for women undergoing miscarriages in the first and second trimester; we require nurses that have experience in this area, however bespoke training and support will be given.
You will be expected to provide a supportive role and contribute to the education and training of student nurses, medical students, and other trainees that may be placed for training on ward 21. You will be able to prioritise and delegate in a changing and challenging environment whilst supporting staff on shift and require strong organisational and leadership skills.

* To assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in the review of nursing practice and service delivery.
* Provide clinical expertise across both ward areas including orthopaedics, gynaecology, and urology.
* To role model high standards of nursing care and professionalism.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
* To assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care of patients, incorporating the standards and philosophy of the ward and evidence-based research.
* Organise method of care delivery within the ward/department, allocating, prioritising, and delegating effectively. This includes responding to capacity and patient dependency requirements.
* Maximise opportunities for health promotion and education.
* To act as a resource person to others providing information to junior staff, multidisciplinary team (MDT) members, patients, and relatives.
Professional
* To demonstrate a professional approach to leadership and management of staff.
* To provide clinical support and advice to junior members of staff.
* To participate in the development of research-based practice.
* To act as a facilitator for change within the ward environment.
* To work closely with medical colleagues, providing them with professional nursing expertise and input.

Management
To be responsible for the day-to-day running of the ward in the absence of the ward manager. Promote effective communication within the nursing team, to patients, carers, visitors, members of the multi-disciplinary team, and external agencies.
Service Management
* To assist when necessary with the definition of nursing standards and maintain the provision and effectiveness of those standards in line with clinical governance.
* The post holder will ensure that they are aware of all issues relating to Clinical Governance, Quality Assurance, and Clinical Effectiveness and that they carry out their duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards.
* To assist when necessary with the initiation and evaluation of any projects or research appropriate to the services provided within the ward in line with clinical governance.
Education
* To help to create and maintain an environment conducive to development and learning for all staff.
* To assist in identifying the need for, and providing training/education in clinical nursing and managerial techniques to all grades of staff.
* To assist the ward manager in ensuring that all new staff receive adequate induction and orientation which is appropriate for them, and the needs of the ward.
* To participate in the sharing of knowledge with colleagues.
* Use reflective practice to enhance development of self and others.
* To assist and support all grades of staff with their professional and personal development by helping to set and monitor objectives.

* Relevant Mentorship or equivalent qualification
* Degree in nursing or any other relevant discipline or equivalent experience
* Evidence of post-registration education
