Job Description:
At Leonardo, we are looking for a Head of Electronics Engineering to join our team based across Edinburgh and Newcastle. The Radar and Advanced Targeting line of business, based in Edinburgh, is uniquely positioned as one of the world's top manufacturers of radars, lasers and infra-red countermeasure systems.
As the Head of Electronics Engineering, you will lead the Electronics Engineering team for the Radar & Advanced Targeting and CS3 (Edinburgh) businesses. The Electronics Engineering team spans a range of sub-disciplines such as Firmware, RF, digital, general and more. You will report directly to the VP of Electronics Engineering UK and VP Engineering (RATS).
This role provides you with the opportunity to work with, develop and nurture some of the most highly talented engineers in our industry. You will be involved with world-class technology and products at the cutting edge of our industry across a broad product base. You will have the opportunity to influence the technology and design methodology for the Electronics Engineering function. You will have experience of innovative solutions and ideas into our next generation products. You will also be responsible for helping to shape the technology processes and tools we use.
Key Responsibility Areas:
* Provide leadership and technical engineering expertise for problem resolution and creating innovative solutions.
* Lead, mentor and coach staff to enhance leadership and technical capability within the function.
* Define, deliver and deploy the technology route maps aligned to capability growth.
* Accountability for provision of resources & capability to each of the business sectors and Integrated Project Teams.
* Ownership of the Electronics process improvement plan, ensuring alignment to the UK wide functional strategy.
* Responsible for Electronics Work Package estimate reviews and for resourcing during project execution.
* Delivery of the engineering tools plan for the site ensuring a common delivery approach across the UK.
* Define the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) activities for Electronics engineering.
* Engage with, influence and represent Electronics Engineering with the Digital Engineering.
* Deliver credible supply plans to deliver projects to budget and schedule.
The key outputs are:
* Site-specific Electronics Engineering strategy including: Technology route map, new product introduction, IT/Tools Roadmap.
* Management of the functional budget including Training/Development plans.
* Electronics communications plan.
* Oversee the Electronics supply plan to meet the demands of the RATS Engineering Sectors/IPTs/CDTs.
* Support to process development and business improvement initiatives for Electronics engineering across the UK sites.
Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required:
Essential requirements:
* Broad understanding of electronics in a number of areas.
* Proven leadership skills in a high complexity, dynamic environment at a senior level.
* Ability to influence the engineering team and interface with other senior functional and sector engineering leads.
* Broad experience of a number of the lifecycle phases combined with a strong technical background in one or more Electronics sub-discipline (e.g. RF/Microwave, Digital, Firmware).
* Experience of assessing appropriate Project Gate deliverables and participating in Design Reviews.
* Proven people management and development skills within a large multi skilled team.
* Proven delivery of technology development and insertion into product.
* Extensive knowledge of design and development processes across the product lifecycle.
* Demonstrated performance in delivery of assigned objectives.
Desirable:
* Deep knowledge of one or more electronics sub disciplines.
* Experience in the use and deployment of electronics/systems tools and simulators.
* Practical experience of chairing sub-system stage reviews or independent technical assessor at design review level.
* Demonstrated experience in the definition, estimation and control of work packages.
* Experience with customer/supplier negotiations.
* Experience of taking electronic designs into a production environment.
* Business or Technical Mentoring experience.
* Experience in implementing process improvement initiatives.
* Chartered status.
