We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Technician to join our Estates Team at Sheffield's Northern General Hospital.
Estates plays a crucial role in keeping our hospitals and services running. From essential power, heating, plumbing and mechanical systems, to the inside and outside of our buildings and grounds, Estates staff make sure these are safe and well-maintained for our patients, visitors, and other staff.
This is a hands-on role where you'll be responsible for the day-to-day management, administration, and workload of various operational and reactive engineering staff within Estates. You'll also manage and supervise external engineering contractors, to ensure works are completed on time and to agreed standards.
You'll need to be highly experienced within your trade, as well as have the management, people and communication skills needed to lead an effective team.
Main duties of the job
This is a full-time position, with typical hours of 8am to 4pm Monday to Friday. There's also plenty of opportunity for training and development, including learning skills outside of your core trade (City and Guilds NVQ), training for Authorised Person (AP) status.
1. Carrying out the full range of maintenance duties specific to their core trade as required, including non-routine, planned, corrective and breakdown maintenance tasks.
2. Developing task lists - including carrying out regular audits.
3. Attending and advising Trust-wide Steering Groups relating to your expertise and ensuring that it is understood and implemented.
4. Undertaking regular Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) and testing of Mechanical systems. Recording and analysing results with reference to historical data and determining appropriate actions and provide condition and non-compliance reports as necessary.
5. Witnessing the testing of new systems, plant and equipment installed on Trust property. Reconfirming correct operation on a regular basis and providing appropriate training to other Estates staff and users.
6. Being available for on-call and out-of-hours cover with the availability to be on-site within 30 minutes of a call (with additional out-of-hours pay). You will be required to carry a Trust mobile phone for this purpose and expected to work under your own initiative with the freedom to make decisions.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
* Hold a Degree and specialist knowledge or equivalent level of knowledge - for example acquired through completion of a recognised trade apprenticeship and hold a Btec/HNC/Diploma in Engineering or equivalent City & Guilds qualification with intermediate practical and theoretical knowledge acquired through a diploma or equivalent experience.
* To have completed Accredited HTM Specialist Healthcare Systems Authorised Person Course.
* Multi-skilled qualifications.
* Confined spaces training.
Experience
* Must have thorough understanding of your specialist area and be fully conversant with current legislation.
* Must be able to demonstrate suitable post apprenticeship experience in non-routine maintenance and fault finding of complex building services and equipment with a broad understanding of other trade disciplines.
* Experience of liaison with and supervising building and engineering staff and contractors.
* Experience in a hospital maintenance environment with exposure to all building and engineering aspects.
* Held Authorised Person and/or Competent Person Role.
Skills and Knowledge
* Thorough knowledge of relevant NHS Technical standards and HTMs /HBNs.
* Good communication, negotiating and inter-personal skills.
* Knowledge of Health & Safety Policy and Safe Working Procedures.
* Knowledge of statutory legislation and relevant Codes of Practice.
* Able to read, understand and analyse complex engineering systems and drawings.
* Ability to work under own initiative in a demand driven service.
* Familiarity with Microsoft software and general computer literacy.
* Knowledge of operating a computerised labour management system.
* Good supervisory skills.
* Knowledge of operating a computerised building management system.
* Mentoring and Training experience.

Salary: £37,338 to £44,962 a yearpa/ pro rata for part-time staff.
