Salary: £38,000 - £42,000 dependent upon skills and experience

Brodie Engineering: A Leading Rolling Stock Engineering Business offers a comprehensive range of refurbishment, maintenance, overhaul, engineering support, project management, and repair services to the UK rail and light rail sector.
We operate from our depots in Kilmarnock, Scotland and provide a mobile service to the rail industry over the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland.
Due to expansion, Brodie Engineering is looking to recruit an experienced Buyer to join the team. Reporting to the Purchasing Manager, the Buyer will establish new and build on existing supply chain relationships with responsibility for delivering effective sourcing of materials and services. Managing supplier price and lead time negotiations while purchasing and expediting for the different business projects, most importantly within or under budget and on time.
Main Duties:
1. Liaise and support the tendering process during the enquiry phase of projects securing supplier quotes and lead times.
2. Proactively manage supplier relationships to continually identify savings and business improvement opportunities.
3. Monitor and investigate new products and sources of supply focusing on quality, price, and lead time.
4. Work with the Engineering team and Project Managers to review BoM’s, request quotes for materials and services required, and create purchase orders.
5. Negotiate and place purchase orders with agreed suppliers ensuring scheduled reporting and delivery promises are maintained, with information communicated back to the project and engineering teams.
6. Complete commercial checks of payment terms, delivery terms, and general Terms and Conditions to ensure that the Supplier and our Client's terms are aligned.
7. Expedite orders in accordance with purchase order requirements.
8. Review and develop existing suppliers, negotiate contracts with new suppliers, and work with the Quality Manager to ensure standards are met.
9. Conduct regular meetings with suppliers, maintaining good working relationships, and developing and implementing new purchasing initiatives.
10. Identify any potential cost savings across the business and streamline purchasing processes where required.
11. Work with the business to communicate and improve delivery update systems accordingly.
12. Develop reporting which will monitor progress and performance of the buying activities.
13. Promote Brodie Engineering’s behavioural expectations by enhancing and supporting working relationships within the business, customers, and external agencies.
14. Comply with all Brodie Engineering policies as detailed in the Employee Handbook.
Key Relationships:
Reporting directly to the Purchasing Manager, the Buyer will work closely with Production, Engineering, and Stores teams.
To be successful in the role:
1. Understanding materials, equipment, and services in a commercial engineering environment.
2. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ideally SAGE accounting systems.
3. Negotiating and influencing skills with the ability to adapt to a variety of styles.
4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
5. High levels of organisation and attention to detail.
6. Ability to interface with internal/external stakeholders.
7. Excellent time management skills and the ability to cope with time-pressured situations and effectively prioritise material scheduling.
8. CIPS is desirable but not essential.
