At Forth Ports, we have an opportunity for a motivated individual the chance to kick-start their career with our Safety, Health, Environmental & Quality (SHEQ) apprenticeship. Over two years, you'll gain hands on experience in health, safety, and environmental management while supporting a strong safety culture across the business, develop valuable skills in coaching, risk assessment, incident investigation, auditing, and policy development, and work towards a Safety, Health & Environment Technician Level 3 qualification—all while earning as you learn.
We will hold our assessment day for this role on 29th April 2025 at the Port of Tilbury, where you will have the chance to meet some of the team and to find out more about the role and the apprenticeship. We will be in touch before then to let you know if you have been selected to attend.

About The Role
What you will learn:
During your apprenticeship, you will develop the skills needed to provide proactive coaching, advice, and solutions to support Central Service and Asset teams.
You will gain a deep understanding of hazard management, including how to identify and control risks through risk assessments and work alongside teams to introduce appropriate safety measures. You will also learn how to support compliance with legislation, ISO 45001, and company policies.
As part of the review and audit process, you will assist in internal audits, help identify opportunities for improvement and support continuous improvement initiatives. You will also conduct regular safety inspections and observations, ensuring high safety standards across the business.
In incident investigation, you will develop competence in root cause analysis (RCA), learning how to identify root causes of incidents, provide recommendations for prevention, and communicate lessons learned across the company. You will also analyse trends to support the development of targeted safety improvements.
Additionally, you will contribute to policy and standard development by helping to enhance the company’s Health and Safety Management System, ensuring compliance with legal and operational standards. You will assist in designing clear, accessible policies and explore innovative ways to communicate safety procedures across the workforce.

What are we looking for?
* Functional Skills Level 2 English & Maths (GCSE Grade 4 or above or Equivalent) OR you will need to achieve a Functional Skills Level 2 in both subjects as part of the apprenticeship programme
* A strong interest in health, safety, and environmental management, with a commitment to gaining a NEBOSH General Certificate and IEMA Environmental Management Certificate within an agreed timeframe
* A willingness to learn about Health and Safety legislation and how it applies to port operations
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
* An interest in port operations and logistics, with an awareness of how different departments work together
* A proactive and determined approach, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to work independently
* Strong literacy, numeracy, IT, and administrative skills, with the ability to manage documentation and reports effectively
* Confident communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage teams
* Willingness to learn how to respond to regulatory visits, ensuring compliance with legal and company standards
* Full UK working rights
* UK driving licence preferred
