Job overview
Consultants in Emergency General Surgery (2 posts)
One with colorectal subspecialty interest and one with acute biliary interest.
We are looking to recruit 2 enthusiastic consultants with a special interest in emergency general surgery with a view to reconfiguration of the emergency general surgical services at the Royal United Hospital Bath. These are replacement posts and will help to provide specialist emergency general surgical cover during the day. Successful applicants will join 2 other consultants providing daytime cover Monday to Thursday. Successful applicants will provide daytime consultant supervision of the emergency surgical admission unit (SAU), same day emergency care service (SDEC) and emergency theatres. The posts will also include nighttime and weekend on-call cover participating in a 1 in 12 on call rota with prospective cover.
It is anticipated that one of the posts will contribute to the management of patients presenting with acute biliary pathology and be competent and experienced at laparoscopic cholecystectomy for patients with acute cholecystitis. The other applicant will have a sub-specialist interest in the management of acute colorectal pathology.
The Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust provides acute treatment and care for a catchment population of around 500,000 people in Bath, and the surrounding towns and villages in North East Somerset and Western Wiltshire. The hospital occupies a 52-acre site close to the center of the beautiful and historic World Heritage City of Bath, attracting and retaining a very high caliber of staff across the trust.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties: The holders of these posts will be Consultants in General Surgery with a subspecialist interest in Emergency General Surgery. One post will provide additional support to the management of patients with acute biliary disease, working closely with the current upper GI consultants to offer patients presenting with acute cholecystitis and gallstone pancreatitis in-patient emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The other post will help provide colorectal support for patients with acute colorectal pathology and help to provide emergency colorectal resections alongside the current colorectal consultants.
Flexible sessions within the job plan allow prospective cover of the acute surgical unit when other emergency consultants are on leave, as well as the opportunity to undertake elective activity within the department. This may include endoscopy sessions, out-patient clinics and elective lists depending on the clinical interests of the successful applicants.
They will take part in the 1 in 12 on-call rota based at the RUH.
The post will be based at the RUH and the holder will participate in audit and directorate meetings and undertake administrative duties as required by the Lead Clinician of General Surgery.
A commitment to maintain professional expertise by attendance at meetings and courses is expected, and completion of diaries for CME is essential. It is also essential that you have an annual appraisal.
An interest in teaching and research is encouraged, with participation in projects, courses, etc to enhance the standing and role of the Department and the Trust. RUH Bath has a medical student academy in affiliation with the Bristol Medical School and formal teaching roles in the medical school are available. The Directorate of surgery has two dedicated research nurses and we take part in a wide range of national portfolio trials.
The post holder will be expected to cover for colleagues when absent or on leave. A minimum of six weeks’ notice for all leave is required.
