An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the nursing team on Ruby Ward, Shaftesbury clinic, forensic inpatient services, located at the Southwest London and St. Georges Mental Health Trust, Tooting, London. We have a large and supportive nursing team consisting of the deputy ward managers, staff nurses and healthcare assistants working in collaboration with other professionals constituting the multidisciplinary team, MDT.
The ward is a 10-bed female Medium Secure Unit currently located on the Springfield Hospital site. We are a medium secure female forensic unit in Shaftesbury Clinic, providing specialised multi-disciplinary care to the female mentally disordered offenders.
We provide short- and long-term hospital admissions to female patients suffering from serious mental health problems such as psychotic illness, bipolar affective disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Main duties of the job
As a Staff Nurse registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, NMC, you provide direct personal care to service users/patients, without direct supervision and co-ordinate the care given by colleagues. The post holder will deliver high quality safe nursing care, ensuring consistently high standards of practice and clinical excellence which comply with the NMC code of professional conduct.
The role includes leading the delivery of comprehensive service user assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of person-centred care in a collaborative way. The post holder will co-ordinate a first-class service that includes assessment and monitoring of physical health, maintaining service users' rights, supervising junior staff and students, working collaboratively with the Multi-Disciplinary Team and maintaining a safe and therapeutic working environment and accurate records.
Job responsibilities
* Leading on and undertaking activities to ensure that the fundamentals of care are met - nutrition, hydration, hygiene, comfort, emotional and social support.
* Co-ordinating shifts and ensuring the smooth running of the ward.
* Co-ordinating and evaluating collaborative patient-centered care; getting feedback and improving care plans with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT).
* Providing accurate information about care in an accessible format to patients and their relatives/carers.
* Liaising and working positively with members of the multi-disciplinary team and partner organisations, to ensure that appropriate and individual treatment is provided.
* Administering, and monitoring the side-effects of, medication; monitoring service user compliance.
* You will also have opportunities to work with student nurses (in a supervisor role and possibly as an assessor if qualified).
Person Specification
Education and Qualification
* Registered Adult Nurse and/or Registered Mental Health Nurse and/or Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse.
Experience and Knowledge
* Experience of research-based/reflective practice, e.g. understanding and ability to use supervision to reflect on skills, attitude and knowledge and develop these by using evidence-based practice.
* Knowledge of relevant Professional and Clinical legislation.
* Experience of shift co-ordination.
* Experience of supervising and mentoring junior staff and students.

Salary: £35,964 to £43,780 a year per annum inclusive of inner London HCAS.
