Considering joining our team? Our modern, purpose-built City Hospital first opened in 2010, with our UKAS accredited Microbiology department staffed by a friendly, busy and professional team of highly motivated BMS, and ATO support workers, dealing with around half a million samples per year.
The laboratory work encompasses the usual areas of Bacteriology, Parasitology, Mycology and Serology as well as a specialist Diagnostic Molecular testing suite.
Our Department is an IBMS registered training facility, offering support for Registration and Specialist Portfolios as well as the Higher Specialist Diploma. Staff are encouraged to undertake further training and development and, if interested, undertake roles in the laboratory quality management system.
Main duties of the job
For Biomedical Scientist roles you should be HCPC registered, or in the process of registration, and well versed in the workings of a routine Microbiology Laboratory, and able to contribute effectively to the departmental output. You will also need to be enthusiastic and highly motivated, computer literate and familiar with working to UKAS standards.
The department operates on a 24/7 working day, in which you will be required to participate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
***This vacancy would include night shifts***
Take part in a regular appraisal system and has individual objectives that are in line with the Department’s business plan.
Liaise with maintenance engineers in relation to on-site work.
Provide training to Band 5 BMS, Associate Practitioner (AP), Assistant Technical Officer (ATO), and Trainee BMS staff as required.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
* Accredited BSc honours degree in biomedical sciences or equivalent
* HCPC registration
* Evidence of progress towards the Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology
* Evidence of training/qualification in other areas related to Laboratory work e.g. Health and Safety
Experience
* Experience in a Clinical Pathology Laboratory at a minimum of BMS Trainee level.
* To have some experience of audit.
* Experience of operating Serology Elisa analysers.
* Experience of operating molecular analysers and extraction protocols
Skills
* Good standards of written communication
General
* Relevant Clinical Microbiology Lab experience.
* A sound knowledge of Clinical Microbiology practice underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
