Auxiliary workers support the success of our operation by performing important community work on an as-required basis. This can be to help fill vacant shifts or address added seasonal workloads. This position performs manual work entailing physical effort and agility, routinely operates a dump panel and flat bed truck, and is responsible for litter collection services from City parks, roadsides, bus stops and other designated areas, as well as attendant duties at the Recycling Depot. This position supports operations that have shifts 7 days a week and you could be scheduled during any of these days.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Collecting litter, garbage and recycling materials from parks, roadsides, ditches, school areas, bus stops and designated areas. This is a seven-day per week operation.
* The safe and efficient operation of vehicles.
* Manually loading and unloading vehicles.
* Assisting the public at the Recycling Depot (seven-day per week operation 9:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m.).
* Providing customer service to internal and external clients.
* Responding to questions and concerns from the public regarding recycling and garbage services.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
* Knowledge of general solid waste and recycling operations, including programs and services provided by the City of Richmond.
* Ability to use tact and courtesy with members of the public and staff, and project a positive image of the City at all times.
* Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the work, as well as safe work procedures, practices, methods and materials involved in the work performed.
* Knowledge of safe truck driving techniques as applied to municipal maintenance and construction operations, including safe and efficient operation of vehicles while transporting materials, equipment, parts, supplies and employees on a variety of tasks.
* Must be able to lift, carry and push in excess of 20 kg (45lbs) on a regular and/or repetitive basis.
* Skill in the use and operation of a variety of power and hand tools, materials and equipment used in the work.
* Sound knowledge of municipal streets and traffic routes.
* Ability to safely operate light duty vehicles.
* Ability to drive in non-standard areas and to safely maneuver vehicle under non-standard driving conditions.
* Ability to safely and efficiently carry out oral and written instructions.
* Ability to prepare and maintain basic records and communications related to the work.
* Ability to plan and organize own workload and ability to initiate operational adjustments based on service needs.
* Ability to orient and mentor new staff.
* Must successfully clear a Police Information Check.
* Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented with up to 1 year of experience in operating a truck.
* Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or higher) for the Province of British Columbia with a clean driver’s abstract for the Province of British Columbia.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, supplemented with up to 1 year of experience in operating a truck.
* Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or higher) for the Province of British Columbia with a clean driver’s abstract for the Province of British Columbia.
Preferred Qualifications:
* First Aid Level 1, 2 or 3
* Dangerous Good Certification
* Traffic Control Certification
* Valid Class 3 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia with Air Brake Endorsement
* Valid Class 1 Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia with Air Brake Endorsement
* Experience operating heavy equipment and/or operating a commercial vehicle
Working Conditions:
* Routine light to heavy physical effort is required to carry out duties, including regular and/or repetitive lifting up to 20 kg (40 lbs).
* Working adjacent to moving traffic while in the course of duties.
* Exposure to heavy equipment on construction/job sites.
* Requires visual effort and mental concentration.
* Regular exposure to minor and/or occasional exposure to major disagreeable conditions or hazards from waste containers. Some examples of conditions or hazards include animal feces, exposure to needles/sharps, hazardous waste, and insects.
* Work is performed in all weather conditions.
