Senior Controls Engineer Job Purpose
The primary purpose of the Senior Controls Engineer role is to lead the design and development of controls solutions for machines and conveyor systems to the specified brief. The role includes creating technical documentation such as software code, calculations, risk assessments, HMI design, and operation instructions. The role encompasses the full project lifecycle, from initial concept development through to commissioning and final delivery.
Senior Controls Engineer Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Lead the design and development of controls systems to specified brief.
2. Produce PLC software, HMI designs, and safety systems in accordance with company standards.
3. Produce technical documentation in accordance with company standards.
4. Undertake peer reviews of colleagues’ work (coding, calcs, documentation, etc.)
5. Ensure design compliance with project brief, relevant standards, and regulations.
6. Carry out analysis of systems with a view to debugging, improving safety and functionality.
7. Lead controls engineering activities to support successful delivery of projects.
8. Lead the commissioning of controls systems both in the factory and on customer sites.
9. Provide support to other areas of the business when controls knowledge is required.
10. Provide support and guidance to junior team members when required.
11. Lead the development of processes to improve efficiency and project delivery.
Senior Controls Engineer Key Skills & Attributes
1. Excellent knowledge of PLC programming software (Siemens TIA portal) (essential)
2. Good knowledge of industrial communication protocols (PROFINET, AS-i, IO-Link, etc.) (essential)
3. Good understanding of distributed control systems (desirable)
4. Excellent understanding of software testing and emulation (essential)
5. Good knowledge of reading and interpreting wiring diagrams (essential)
6. Basic 2D CAD software knowledge (EPLAN) (desirable)
7. Excellent understanding of the design process, and its associated documentation (essential)
8. Excellent knowledge of machinery design standards and regulations (essential)
9. Good understanding of electrical design principles (essential)
10. Basic understanding of mechanical design principles (desirable)
11. Extensive experience working within an industrial automation environment (essential)
12. Excellent knowledge of conveyor systems (desirable)
13. Excellent understanding of machine fault finding (desirable)
14. Good understanding of checking coding, calculations, technical docs (redline markup) (essential)
15. Qualified in a relevant design or engineering discipline (HNC, degree, etc.) (desirable)
16. Ability to clearly communicate design ideas (essential)
17. Ability to mentor and guide junior colleagues (essential)
18. Ability to manage your own workload & work on multiple projects (essential)
