The Waste Strategy team is responsible for developing and maintaining the investment strategies associated with the waste services to deliver our outcomes for customers and the environment and meet our performance commitments and statutory obligations in the most efficient way.
Our team's function is to understand the needs and challenges of our assets in the future and develop adaptive pathways to ensure our wastewater assets are resilient and able to meet these future needs. We also produce business plans and long-term strategies that outline these plans and meet the expectations of our customers and regulators.
This role will focus on meeting needs for Wessex Water's foul, surface and combined network assets, including storm overflows. This is an exciting new role in an expanding team that will continue to grow in the coming years to meet the new legal requirements of the Drainage and Wastewater Management Plan (DWMP). Be a part of this pivotal team, leading the strategy and future direction of how we manage our wastewater assets.
In this varied role, you will focus on drainage and sewerage strategy, including overseeing storm overflow investigations and improvements. This role will significantly contribute to the production of our long-term strategies and adaptive plans to inform the DWMP, drainage strategies, long-term delivery strategies, storm overflow action plans and other strategies. You will also manage a small team of experienced drainage and wastewater specialists.
What you'll do
In this role, you will:
* assist with the development of relevant company investment strategies (including our five-year business plan and DWMP)
* ensure our plans meet our long-term objectives and statutory obligations and include cost-beneficial investments, as well as taking into account uncertainty and change
* identify and develop strategic opportunities for the company, including enhancement plans for the company's major assets, and the promotion of nature-based and sustainable solutions that align with corporate objectives and strategies
* liaise with and influence environmental regulators (the Environment Agency and Natural England) such that their support for mutually beneficial projects is obtained
* provide technical assessment and risk management advice to ensure compliance with regulatory consents is maintained
* ensure the DWMP framework is followed to identify risks now and into the future and report on these as required (annually)
* ensure the storm overflow discharge reduction plan and infiltration reduction plans are followed to ensure we deliver the required short, medium and long-term storm overflow improvement targets
* perform high-level strategic optioneering and critical reviews of network hydraulic modelled outputs (including storm overflow and flooding requirements) including costs and benefits assessments
* liaise with service providers and Operations teams to secure their support and agreement to investment plans and solutions for non-modelled outcomes (such as pollutions and blockage reduction strategies)
* manage updates to our public-facing DWMP portals and webpages
* assist in our DWMP resilience and environmental assessments
* drive and champion innovative solutions into the business.
What you'll need
We are looking for:
* relevant degree qualification or equivalent; preferably chartered engineer or equivalent status
* excellent analytical and influential oral and written communication skills
* excellent knowledge of drainage and sewerage network systems and hydraulic design
* good understanding of hydraulic and water quality principles and modelling software
* good working knowledge of the interfaces with other disciplines, eg, civil, hydraulic, process, electrical, modelling, etc
* good knowledge of the financial and environmental regulatory frameworks affecting planning and investment in water company assets
* good knowledge of the planning and legal environment as it affects investment planning and implementation
* knowledge of the operational environments, operator skill levels and operating and maintenance cost implications of proposed investments
* knowledge of asset management principles and practice
* high level interpersonal skills to enable effective working with people at all levels
* experience delivering results through cross-functional working
* experience with geospatial information systems to analyse and present spatial data.
