About the Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed R&D Laboratory Research Engineer to join our growing R&D team based in our R8 R&D and Innovation Centre in Redditch. This role will provide laboratory test and support facilities to the DS Smith Group to enhance knowledge of our products and their lifecycle. You will be responsible for testing the physical properties of fibre-based packaging, ensuring the highest quality for our customers.
This role suits someone who can work independently with minimal guidance but can also follow detailed test protocols. The position involves a mixture of routine testing and analysis, along with the opportunity to develop test methodologies and product technologies, supporting the Group R&D and Innovation teams.
As the successful candidate, you will ensure test protocols are fully understood and followed, continually seeking improvements to assist in the development of processes and products. You will maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality, as the work will involve commercial and technical sensitivity. Excellent reporting skills are necessary, using tools such as the Microsoft suite to report accurate data and record relevant information. You will keep up-to-date records of tests requested, in progress, and reported to measure against KPIs. Additionally, you will ensure the laboratory and its equipment are maintained to the correct standard.
About You
* Educated to a BSC level in science, preferably in Technical/Engineering, Physics, or Chemistry.
* Experience in a laboratory environment is preferred, although full training will be provided for the successful applicant.
* Competence in the Microsoft Office suite is required.
* A mix of practical and theoretical ability is desirable.
* A high degree of numeracy is required for laboratory operations and testing.
* Experience within the Paper/Packaging Industry is advantageous, although any experience in a test/quality position in a large manufacturing industry is also suitable.
* Must be able to speak and write English to a professional standard.
