About the Role:
As Matron, you will have a diverse and impactful role, covering:
* The Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Site (NGH)
* The Hospital Palliative Care Specialist Nurse Team across both campuses
* A Geriatric base ward, likely based at NGH

With three key directorates within the Care Group, this role spans across two of these directorates: Therapeutics and Palliative Care & Integrated Geriatric and Stroke Medicine, offering you the chance to lead in multiple areas.

Main duties of the job
Maintain professional competence and credibility by staying hands-on in clinical areas across the Care Group.
Assess complex patient issues, make decisions, and ensure timely, safe, and optimal patient care.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across the Trust to improve patient care and service delivery.
Approach patient care with empathy, sensitivity, and confidentiality, understanding both physical and emotional needs.
Lead in managing sensitive issues with patients, families, and staff, ensuring a compassionate approach.
Investigate complaints, respond appropriately, and support initiatives for patient involvement and feedback.
Review incidents, audits, and take action to ensure systems are in place for best practices.
Stay updated on Trust and Nursing Policies, providing guidance and ensuring adherence.
Ensure accurate, timely, and complete care records are maintained.
Help develop and maintain effective governance systems and ensure compliance with national guidelines (NPSA, NICE, CQUIN).
Ensure strict adherence to infection control policies and best practices to protect patient health.
Offer specialist advice to patients, carers, and the healthcare team, including primary/secondary care and external agencies.
Act as a role model and mentor, providing exemplary practice and supporting the nursing team.
Lead audits, surveys, and research to improve nursing practice, ensuring compliance with evidence-based standards.

Qualifications Essential
* Registered Nurse (Adult)
* Relevant clinical knowledge in an acute hospital setting
* To have completed the national PEAP programme for practice supervisors or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification for those with ENB998.
* Masters level study
Desirable
* Recognised management / leadership qualification
Experience Essential
* Experience of managing high quality patient centred acute services.
* Relevant management and leadership experience at Band 7 or above
* Proven change management skills
* Demonstratable experience in ensuring capacity and flow within acute services meets patient demand.
* Experience of budget management.
* Ability to manage complex governance processes
Desirable
* Experience of transformational change.
* Experience of managing clinical nurse specialists.
* Experience in palliative care and/or geriatric and stroke medicine
Further Training Essential
* Knowledge and understanding of local and regional agenda regarding Palliative Care/ Geriatric and Stroke Medicine.
