A Snapshot of Your Day
As a HVD C Protection Engineer, you will work with a team of HVDC project management and engineering specialists to design and deliver full HVDC control and protection solutions for both wind farm grid connections and interconnectors, making use of a new transient network analysis laboratory located in Manchester.
You will report to the Engineering Manager - HVDC C&P and will be required to provide engineering work packages in line with project and business objectives.
How You'll Make an Impact
1. Responsibility for the preparation of quotations, as well as for the engineering phase, performance, and customer acceptance tests. Support during the commissioning phase from Manchester up to handover to the customer.
2. Development of DC protection concepts of self-guided multilevel converters with half-bridge and full-bridge modules for different applications such as symmetrical monopole, bipole, offshore connections, or multi-terminal systems.
3. Performance of protection coordination studies of HVDC systems using the simulation tool PSCAD/EMTDC, including determination of DC protection settings and preparation of a study report.
4. Programming the software of DC protection and Measurement system in MATLAB/SIMULINK and CFC on the SIMATIC TDC multiprocessor automation system and PLUSCONTROL platform.
5. Functional and Performance testing: Model-Based-Testing (MBT) in SIMULINK and Hardware in the Loop (HiL) with Real-Time Simulation Systems (RTDS).
6. Customer training and acceptance tests as well as submission of lessons learned for improvement as a central contact person for your project as a protection engineer.
7. Support in research and development topics for HVDC projects and first point of contact for problem solving and after sales.
What You Bring
1. University degree in electrical engineering or a comparable field of study; ideally a doctorate in the field of protection technology.
2. Experience in the areas of control and protection, especially in the development of DC protection concepts for HVDC, FACTS, or large-scale converter applications.
3. Experience in software engineering and testing of SRS systems (open/closed loop controls and system dynamics) and very good knowledge of MATLAB/SIMULINK, ideally in connection with real-time and embedded software.
4. Solid knowledge in modelling and simulation studies with the industrial power system program PSCAD/EMTDC.
5. Ideally knowledge of Git for version control, IEC61850 and data modelling as well as Simatic Manager and CFC.
6. A fluent English speaker and writer with German preferable.
7. Strong communication and teamwork skills for result-oriented and creative development of our projects, focus on high-quality execution of our solutions.
