The Dannevirke Hunt in beautiful Southern Hawkes Bay, New Zealand has been operating for 114 years and has a proven record of producing quality Huntsmen. The Hunt has a passionate and strong, friendly membership ranging in age from keen youth members to dedicated older members. Our Hunt country is stunning with wide ranging farm types from flat land to rolling hills and into stronger hill country with big open paddocks.
The position offers a great opportunity for a competent rider who is passionate and loves to hunt, and who is keen to develop a career with hounds and horses in the great outdoors of our outstanding hunt countryside, offering the following:
1. Great hunting on a variety of properties with a strong pack of Harrier Hounds.
2. The opportunity to develop skills as a Huntsman.
3. Support from passionate, enthusiastic and experienced Hunt members.
4. A desirable remuneration package which reflects the experience and resources the new Huntsman will bring.
The Dannevirke Hunt season runs from late March through to the beginning of July with a total of about 30 hunts. We generally hunt 2 days a week - on one day in the weekend (Saturday or Sunday depending on circumstances) and also on a Wednesday. Exercising of the hounds usually begins in January.
The position of Dannevirke Huntsman requires the following attributes:
1. A competent horse person capable of hunting over a range of fences, with a team of horses suited to hunting Dannevirke country.
2. Experience with handling hounds and with an absolute commitment to the care and welfare of the hounds.
3. Honesty, with a strong work ethic.
4. Good people skills, a positive attitude and the ability to work as part of a team.
5. Physical fitness and ability to carry out the duties required of the position.
6. Ability to tend to the property maintenance as required.
7. A truck driver’s licence (minimum Class 2) and firearms licence OR a willingness to sit them prior to starting.
