Job summary This is a substantive 10PA consultant appointment with a view to shaping the future of Skin Cancer services in Eastern half of the East of England. NNUH delivers both a cutaneous surgical oncology service and an advanced reconstructive service, within the Plastic and Reconstructive surgery department at NNUH. The skin cancer specialist MDT is responsible for a population of 2.5M people. According to GIRFT, NNUH is the fourth busiest service in the UK. The tertiary referral service is based on a hub-spoke model with specialist services delivered at NNUH, with local skin cancer MDT referrals from the surrounding district dermatology services based at Kings Lynn, North Norfolk, Great Yarmouth, and Ipswich & North-East Essex. Specialist services delivered at NNUH include: Sentinel node biopsy Mohs surgery and associated reconstructions Microsurgery Isolated limb infusion (quaternary referral service) Endoscopic lymphadenectomy Endoscopic microsurgery The skin cancer service links well with the on-site Dermatology and Oncology services, allowing for combined clinics as a standard of care. The Mohs service is truly collaborative with 3 plastic surgeons delivering the service alongside Dermatologists. The specialist MDT is a supra-regional referral service for the management of in transit metastases, and we assess and manage patients from the East of England Network. Main duties of the job The post ideally suited to an applicant with extensive experience in surgical oncology for skin cancer and sarcoma. The principal responsibility will be the delivery of tertiary and quaternary care for skin cancer patients. This will include melanoma surgery with sentinel lymph-node biopsy, lymph node clearances and resection/ reconstruction of complex non-melanoma skin cancers. It will also require the delivery of skin cancer surgery at one of our peripheral sites. The post will also include the review of urgent suspected sarcoma referrals and participation in the sarcoma MDT. The post includes an on-call commitment with a 1:12 rotation. This includes a 'hotweek' whereby a weekend on call is followed by a week of daytime cover. During this week elective activity is cancelled to provide time for daily ward rounds, review of admissions and emergency surgery. Trauma surgery is supported by the upper and lower limb subspecialties and more complex cases therefore have two consultants available along with resident doctors. Out of hours is a non-resident on call. The on call is accounted for by PA allocation and a 3% availability supplement.
