We have an exciting opportunity for a consultant post responsible for the provision of general surgery with an interest in colorectal surgery within Swansea Bay University Health Board.
At present there are 23 general surgeons serving Swansea in Swansea Bay University Health Board. The majority of these surgeons have sessions in both Morriston and Singleton Hospitals, but all major surgery and emergency intake occur on the Morriston site.
The well-established colorectal unit has a national reputation providing local and regional services.
General Surgery Services at Swansea University Health Board are provided for the local populations (over 500,000 residents) of Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Bridgend, and South Powys and tertiary services are provided to the wider population of Mid and Southwest Wales (population 1,000,000).
The Department of Lower GI Surgery forms part of the Surgical Directorate, which includes Colorectal, Pancreatic, Bariatric, Oesophageal, Endocrine, Vascular and Urology Surgery. The Directorate is led by a Clinical Director supported by a Clinical Lead, General Manager and a Head of Nursing.
We have close links with Swansea University and other University College partners in South Wales especially in the areas of research and development and multi-professional teaching.

Main duties of the job
You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of colorectal disease and the full range of emergency general surgical conditions.
You will participate in the on-call rota at Morriston Hospital, with prospective cover. It may also be necessary to undertake emergency duties at other locations with the Health Board including out of hours cover for elective inpatients at Singleton Hospital. Travelling as necessary between hospitals/clinic will be required to undertake such duties. Travel expenses will be remunerated according to the Health Board policy and procedures for claiming.
You will be named in the contracts of junior medical staff as the person expected to act as Educational Supervisor for those assigned to you, overseeing their training and being the initial source of advice for doctors regarding their careers, within the guidelines of the specialist bodies and medical royal colleges. Medical trainees in Wales are required to agree an educational contract jointly between them, the Health Board and the Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW).

* On Specialist Register with GMC as a specialist in general surgery with a special interest in colorectal surgery or eligible for CCT within 6 months of date of interview and have passed exit exam or a statement of eligibility for registration issued by PMETB or a primary medical qualification and recognized specialist qualification from a European Member State which will allow direct entry to the GMC Specialist Register
