Our WQ and E (Water Quality & Environment) team have an opportunity for you to join as our new Micro and Crypto Manager. You’ll lead and manage a team of expert technicians and be responsible for the laboratory and sampling systems to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and that the staff and methods in operation are performing to the required quality.
You’ll be accountable for owning and delivering effective resource management with the team to achieve our regulatory requirements and budgetary responsibilities of £500k per annum.
You’ll also ensure compliance with all H&S requirements, owning and promoting key risks through stakeholders and ensuring their resolution.

1. You’ll be responsible for the operation and management of the Company’s microbiology and cryptosporidium analytical function at its two laboratories in Shrewsbury and Nottingham, in compliance with the STW Quality Manual to meet legal requirements set by the Regulator (DWI), and quality standards as defined by UKAS accreditation to ISO 17025.
2. Accountability for budgets, identifying cost improvements and ensuring the team are competent, methods, equipment and facilities are validated and fit for purpose and quality controls are in place.
3. Promote and lead problem-solving activities within your team to ensure continuous improvement through technical and process improvement and ensure 100% compliance with the company safety standards.
4. Act as the company representative for microbiology and contribute to designated water industry groups, while maintaining regular communication with management and other stakeholders.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Of course, it’s important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.
Apart from being a great fit for the team you’ll ideally have worked with an ISO quality system, hold a Chartered status with the relevant professional body and experience of working in a regulatory laboratory environment in the Water Industry, similar Utility or Environmental Industries.
You’ll demonstrate strong communication, problem-solving and IT skills and have experience supervising or managing and developing a team. You’ll have a comprehensive understanding of the Quality Management System and be able to critically evaluate and draw conclusions from scientific and other data.
