Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
Collects blood from patients of all ages as required by physician orders. Performs patient registration and accessions lab orders as appropriate. Processes blood to prepare for shipping and testing in all laboratory areas. Responds to phone inquiries in a timely manner and refers problems to the appropriate supervisor. Participates in Quality Assurance activities. Supports staff via training, competency assessment, continuing education, and performance evaluation.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Know policies, procedures and practices necessary to perform a variety of routine specimen collection procedures using standard techniques and equipment.
2. Respond to requests for emergency service in a timely manner.
3. Organize workload within the department and prepare schedule to meet the needs of the institution.
4. Provide leadership for the staff in the department.
5. Make decisions and establish priorities for specimen collection and processing based on established policies and procedures.
6. Maintain clean and safe workstation.
7. Document competency assessment for employees performing registration, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
8. Train personnel in registration, specimen collection, specimen processing and policies and procedures in department.
9. Participate in Laboratory Quality Assurance process by performing quality monitors, process improvement and incident investigations.
10. Adhere to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors.
Experience: 1-3 years
Education: High School or GED
