AWP is an award-winning regional consultancy, providing specialist development planning and infrastructure services to the property industry. We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced person to join our transport planning team, at a salary and grade reflective of capabilities, to support our growing workload into 2024.
Who are we looking for?
We are keen to speak to people with experience in transport planning and working as part of a wider team of professionals to help deliver schemes through the planning process. Your current job title is not so important, but you are likely to have been a graduate in a related subject, and gained a number of years’ experience already working in the industry during which time you will have acquired comprehensive knowledge of the Transport Assessment process and all that entails. Above all though we would like to hear from people with a passion for what they do.
What can you expect from the role?
You can expect to work on and lead a wide variety of projects across all sectors around the south-west region and further afield. To give you a flavour, we are currently working on:
1. Major mixed-use urban extensions in Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset
2. Urban regeneration schemes in Plymouth, Exeter and Bristol
3. Delivery of new employment land in Exeter and Teignbridge
4. Leisure and tourism schemes across the south west
5. Renewable energy facilities in Devon, Dorset and Jersey
6. Proposals for a new trunk road service area
7. Affordable housing and local employment sites to support the rural economy at various sites across the region
8. Project support for charities operating in the development industry
We are looking for somebody to help deliver the highways and transport inputs on projects like these, with support from senior colleagues and our wider team of transport planners, engineers and technicians. You would also work closely with specialists in AWP’s Flood Risk and Development Infrastructure teams, collaborating to deliver for our clients in line with agreed programs and budgets.
What would it be like working for AWP?
AWP has a team of over 40 engineers, transport planners and technicians, and we believe this makes us the largest team specialising in our field of the industry operating in the region. We all have ties with Devon and the Exeter area, and we are very proud to be a part of the dynamic community in the city.
The south-west region is beautiful and truly a wonderful place to live and work. The main urban hubs of Exeter, Plymouth and Bristol are all university cities, with vibrant cultural and leisure scenes. However, the peninsula is also home to some of the most diverse and spectacular countryside, including the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, South Hams and East Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, and some world-famous surfing beaches on the North Devon Coast.
We are based at our office at Pynes Hill in Exeter, which has easy access to local residential areas by foot, the city-wide cycle network, as well as bus and rail links into the city centre and out into East Devon. It is also very handy for the M5 and A30.
Our office has desk space for everybody, as well as numerous meeting rooms and break-out space for collaboration with colleagues. However, we embrace the opportunities of Agile Working and the advantages that can offer in terms of work-life balance, and we are fully set up for remote home working as well.
AWP is a partnership as the name suggests, and we take pride in sharing our success with everybody that has contributed towards it. That’s why everybody at AWP qualifies for our quarterly profit-related bonus scheme, and we think that’s pretty unique in our industry.
Other benefits available working at AWP include:
1. ICE accredited training scheme, and support for professional qualifications through IEng, CEng or TPP.
2. AWP contributions into Group Personal Pension.
3. Membership of the AWP Group Health Scheme.
4. Enhanced parental leave.
5. Benefiz Flexi Pot; to spend on other company benefits such as the cycle purchase scheme, medical screening services, additional life/health.
6. Annual subscriptions for professional institutions.
What do others say?
Don’t just take our word for it – have a look at what others are saying about AWP as a place to work. We have been awarded Investors in People Gold Standard twice in a row, and at our last review in 2022 our IIP Examiner commented that “AWP remains one of the strongest organisations I’ve had the pleasure to work with in relation to supporting people’s careers, and encouraging them to learn new skills and achieve ICE qualification status. People believe that you create an exceptional place to work.”
You can read more about our Investors in People award here.
In 2023, AWP was also shortlisted for the New Civil Engineer Awards in the ‘Best Place To Work – SME Consulting Firm’ category. This recognises consulting firms within the construction and civil engineering industry that are “an exemplar place to work” and which can demonstrate how they have “improved the livelihood of its employees both personally and professionally (be it financially, mentally, socially or otherwise)” over the last year.
